Thanks Kent, know that attempting to fix a system while in production use with time constraints and software constraints (the Google translate engine) is difficult but communication within LACRALO has suffered greatly with the breakdown in mail list translation. Readers on lac-discuss-en are not aware of the conversations on lac-discuss-es and similarly, conversations on lac-discuss-es mailing list are not seen on lac-discuss-en mailing list. However, with the recent list translation update, I note that the subject line is being lost when the email is being translated on the other list. There are a lot of "no subject" or "(sin asunto)" as the subject line instead of the original or translated subject line. This breaks conversation threads and makes following conversations VERY difficult For example, Kent's email on the lac-discuss-en list: http://atlarge-lists.icann.org/pipermail/lac-discuss-en/2011/004308.html Kent's email on the lac-discuss-es list: http://atlarge-lists.icann.org/pipermail/lac-discuss-es/2011/003028.html This needs to be fixed as soon as possible. The automatic list translation software was updated. There are two changes of note:
1) The software now detects when the google back end chokes on a too-large translation request. When this error is detected, instead of translated text the forwarded message will contain an error indication. [By trial and error, the maximum size the translation engine allows seems to be something over 4kb. This may be non-deterministic, since the input and the output may be different wide character sets.]
2) message threads tended grow larger and larger messages, because they contain ever-larger quoted blocks from previous messages. Now we don't attempt to translate quoted text at all -- in some cases this reduced the amount of text sent to the translation by a large amount.
As always, if you detect any problems with this software, please let me know.
