Special event for NGOs during ICANN Marrakech meeting
Hello all, Do you think it could be envisaged to organise some kind of event for NGOs in the Morocco / North Africa region (and beyond) during the next ICANN meeting in Marrakech? This could be an opportunity to discuss various DNS issues and and the roll out of certain new gTLDs including the .NGO / .ONG. I note that the next COP Climate Summit is taking place in Marrakech in November 2016 - a big year for NGOs in the country and broader region. Tom ---- Tel: +33 6 7428 6392 Skype/Twitter: mackenziet
Dear Thomas Greetings and Thanks for your email. To answer your question: "Yes" and "Certainly". NPOC has made some organizational arrangements that give us the possibility to arrange for events, but this is just the organizational platform. What we need to do now is to put some flesh on the bones. I therefor would like to invite you all to make some recommendation with regard to the topics, rationale, structure and even possible speakers for specific speakers. We should collect these suggestions and then decide on which to implement and how. May I suggest that the deadline for suggestions is the 10th of January 2016 and that we will then arrange for a call to discuss proposals. Looking forward to your suggestions Yours Klaus On 12/18/2015 12:24 PM, Thomas Mackenzie wrote:

Thank you, Klaus. This is very encouraging. I shall start thinking about possible speakers for such an event. In the meantime, here’s a list of NGOs active in Morocco. Obviously this is only a subset of the organisations that are active across the broader region, but a start.. http://www.wango.org/resources.aspx?section=ngodir&sub=list&newsearch=1®i... <http://www.wango.org/resources.aspx?section=ngodir&sub=list&newsearch=1®i...> All the best, Tom

Event Structure1:

Civil Society and its NGOs, the Internet’s largest stakeholder group, are increasingly dependent on how the Internet and its underlying Domain Name System (DNS) operate in order to carry on their work. The event will directly address operational concerns of NGOs using the Internet and describes how ICANN address issues and provides solutions. Presentations include" "NGOs’ day to day concerns using the Internet and how Internet Governance and policy making addresses them" "Privacy and how ICANN tries to address the issue".
"Right and Obligations of NGO's on the Net". "Is my NGO secure on the Net?"
"How to participate in ICANN as an NGO".
2) As an alternative, we could use the following event structure:
"How the transfer of the US Government of the so called IANA functions that concern the Domain names, Internet Protocols Assignments and Number Resources, to ICANN, impacts the work of Civil Society Organizations World wide" (there must be a better way to say this!)
Draft Program:
Welcome: 5 minutes
Introduction: IANA Transition! What does that mean for NGO's? (15 Minutes)
Presentations: Impacts of the IANA Transition on Civil Society organizations
Presentation 1: Increased Internet Security and Stability, (20 Minutes, ) Presentation 2: Increased Internet Governance Transparency, (20 Minutes, ) Presentation 3: Increased Internet Governance Participation, (20 Minutes, )

Hello and thank you Klaus to reconnect us with this folder. It is really time that we begin by better preparing Marrakech especially with regard to the bad experience in Dublin. According to my humble opinion, while supporting the idea of maintaining and better control Klaus's first proposal, instead of the second proposal, I propose that we organize a round table on this cruxial question of : "how an civil society organization can become a registrar in Africa Ingternet ecosystem ? " Indeed the issue of gear registrars in Africa is timely. I imagine a presentation on this topic made by an illustrious representative of .ORG as Paul DIAZ surrounded by members of our EXCOM (NPOC) to interact with participants in F2F and remotely. What do you think about this proposal ? My 2 cents, 2016-01-05 9:24 GMT+00:00 Thomas Mackenzie <tom.mackenzie1@gmail.com>:

I note that the next COP Climate Summit is taking place in Marrakech in November 2016 - a big year for NGOs in the country and broader region.

Indeed the issue of gear registrars in Africa is timely.
I imagine a presentation on this topic made by an illustrious representative of .ORG as Paul DIAZ surrounded by members of our EXCOM(NPOC) to interact with participants in F2F and remotely.
What do you think about this proposal ?
My 2 cents,

Klaus, The events need to be scheduled so that they do not conflict with Afro-centric sessions elsewhere at ICANN. My earlier comment stressed drawing in any (NGO, ISP/informal or contracted) African registrars at the Marrakesh meetings. At one or both sessions they specifically should be targeted for both attendance and participation. Sam On 05/01/2016 12:54 PM, Klaus Stoll wrote:

So what we need now is to get speakers fixed and the local and regional outreach going. Tom, can you please follow up with Meagan Falllone, invite her, agree on a topic and discuss regional outreach possibilities. ALL: can you please propose speakers for the topics above. we should also try to engage with speakers from the NCUC here. The doodle poll stays open till the end of the week. Please let us know when you are available. I will close the poll and announce the meeting call by the end of the week. (Tom can you make yourself available somehow, all your dates say no). *"**How to participate in ICANN as an NGO"* *. * 2) *"DNS new business opportunities for registrars across Africa"*, (event during Tuesdays NPOC Constituency days, event organized by Rudi).
Let's get going and looking forward to your suggestions.
Yours
Klaus

Hi Tom, All
Excellent. Let's now plan on the inreach and outreach strategy. We have agreed on the subject, so perhaps now is a good time to confirm place, time and speakers, and send evites out.

Dear Klaus et al,
I’ve just heard from Meagan Fallone, head of Global Strategy and Development of the Barefoot College <http://www.barefootcollege.org/about/staff/international/> that she would be happy to to speak, advocate or be included on any outreach communications in connection with the proposed special event for NGOs, and could make arrangements to attend the Morocco meeting.

Klaus,
The events need to be scheduled so that they do not conflict with Afro-centric sessions elsewhere at ICANN.
My earlier comment stressed drawing in any (NGO, ISP/informal or contracted) African registrars at the Marrakesh meetings.
At one or both sessions they specifically should be targeted for both attendance and participation.

*Dear Friends
After some consideration, I think we do need to make a either/or choice but we can accommodate both events. We should have the"ICANN: The Domain Name System and NGOs – How and Why Should NGOs Get Involved" before the main meeting and we can have the NGO's as Registrars event as part of our constituency day meeting. Does this sound like a good solution?
Please fill out the doodle poll for the planning event.
