As a compromise proposal, perhaps we should move the ua-discuss list to XgenPlus, as a working test of whether we can effectively run an EAI-ready mailing list. cheers -- Using Opera's mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/
I think it is worth considering. Recently, I had a conversation with an organization who was considering changing their listserv system with one that is UA-ready. The question that followed was, of course, are there listserv products UA-ready? I'm not sure if we should show so imperativeness and confers resolutions in the list. I'm not very practiced in this type of communication but we cannot replace without having widespread acumens. Leadership and ample of us are meeting in Montreal, let’s supplicate staging of Xgenplus solution by its folks, candidly if pass on as predictable at that juncture why only ua-discuss we can entreat ICANN to move all list on UA ready solution. Good compromise. We all need the practical experience (good and bad) of using a UA list server. We need to be able to say to all that we are (successfully hopefully) using a UA list server. We need to practice what we preach. We will all learn from the experience and we will, in the future, all be able to thus talk authoritatively about using a UA list server. Yes there will be problems but we will resolve them because we are the pioneers. Personally, I am looking forward to the day when I can communicate with our uasg lists using one of my EAI addresses. Sorry for the belated reply, but I think it's pretty important we have a free and open source EAI mailing list solution; Mailman is pretty universal in this role and it's what ICANN already uses so getting to the point of fixing Mailman to do EAI would allow *all* ICANN lists to support it with a software upgrade (and possible updating/reconfiguring their SMTP servers). Properitary software supporting EAI is fine (and good to see), but we do need to remember that we need to focus on software that we can both fix and is popularly used. Mailman may be universal but it seems very lowest-common denominator. I am not a fan. ICANN finally moved off Adobe Connect. Maybe it's time to move off Mailman. Even if we can make Mailman UA-compatible, it would still be a middling experience to use for other reasons. John Levine mentions that he's looked for UA-compat listservers and found them all lacking. But if one is "close enough" we could try using it and get the bugs fixed, which is after all a goal of this group. -----Original Message----- From: UA-EAI <ua-eai-bounces@icann.org> On Behalf Of Michael Casadevall Sent: Monday, August 12, 2019 10:27 AM To: Andre Schappo <A.Schappo@lboro.ac.uk>; Nitin <nitin@xgenplus.com> Cc: ua-eai@icann.org Subject: Re: [UA-EAI] UA-Ready list server software Sorry for the belated reply, but I think it's pretty important we have a free and open source EAI mailing list solution; Mailman is pretty universal in this role and it's what ICANN already uses so getting to the point of fixing Mailman to do EAI would allow *all* ICANN lists to support it with a software upgrade (and possible updating/reconfiguring their SMTP servers). I'm not a big fan of Mailman either, but if you're looking for open source list management packages, there's Mailman (written in python) and Sympa (written in perl) and not a whole lot else. Majordomo2 is a nice design but it's abandoned and its web interface is painful. I also don't think you'll find much agreement about what list packages should do beyond maintaining lists of subscribers and forwarding mail to them. R's, John
