That is the problem with Africans, we love to 'eat alone', always refusing to work in the collective. So, if AFRALO would help any selectee, it must be those who have identified with AFRALO and supporting it. Nonetheless,its a good advice to have a WG or Task force set up. Best

The complaint is heard. We do not have any NomCom selectee this year from our region and I understand the frustration we all have.
As Peters said it, Africa did not invent the internet and so did not other developing regions but we know how to become excellent in anything. Other developing regions went through years of learning and understanding the process and are succeeding in having nominees in ICANN high positions. That is what I am suggesting and I concur with Seun here. Let's see how we can compete better next time.
Seun, the selection process is not simple. First, for a specific position, we look at profiles and compare them. External experts proceed to analyze them. A very important part of the process is devoted to interviews of the shortlisted candidates.
What is required for each position is publicly known during the call for applications. Each year, the profile the board or other positions are looking for is different.
As I said earlier, our candidates' profiles were very good but they did not always apply for the position that was most suited to them, or they had problems answering questions during the interviews.
The answer to Seun's question about representation is Yes, the NOMCOM members consider geographic representation and also gender when doing their selection but not over quality.
Let me suggest here to AFRALO officers to have a permanent agenda item on this matter on every monthly meeting, starting next meeting. This will allow us to further discuss this issue and set up a WG or Task force on outreach for more African NomCom selectees.

Thanks Fatimata, I concur with Seun. Like every otter structure within ICANN , the NOMCOM should be regionally represented. By the way, when did Africa become internet reliant ? So using the same standard to evaluate qualification with those who invented and has been ahead for decades is just a way of giving a dog a bad name in order to hang it. Africa should be represented and ICANN loses nothing therein. So, I think the AFRALO secretariat should express our concerns please. We should not take every excuse for marginalizing a continent as valid and well intentioned. Thank you.

I participated in the entire selection process and it was done in a very fair way. African candidates had a lot of potential but this time, they were not selected because they were not the best.
I will recommend that all of us start as soon as possible outreach activities to have more African candidates for 2015.
I will make sure you get the information and I would even suggest that we create a small task force within AFRALO for that purpose.
