ALAC Statement on Draft Topic Paper for Policy on the Introduction of IDN ccTLD
As IDN Liaison on the behalf of ALAC, I was asked to prepare an ALAC statement to the ccNSO IDN PDP WG1 Public Comments Requested on Draft Topic Paper for Policy on the Introduction of IDN ccTLDs. http://ccnso.icann.org/announcements/announcement-20oct09.htm Attached is the first cut of the statement I have drafted. Thanks for this Discussion start up paper James... It is always easier to engage in discussion with a framework to work with, whilt I trust that the Publlic At-large list will now begin to have some discussion and exchange on your highlighted points... I'm going to ask staff to assist you in setting up a space in your IDN Liaison Wiki area to also encourage comments to come in that way and I'm asking ALAC Members to ensure that their RALO's and ALSes are aware of this opportunity for input and that they also activly encourage participation in this important matter... Regional statements and contributions also need to be sort out as well... I envisage that both this working list (cc to the Worldwide list I assume) and the proposed Wiki will harbour these desired interchanges... James would you find it useful to have arranged a single topic call to discuss these specific questions? so that ALAC Regional Leadership and ALSes can attend and we can use the Adobe room to capture discussion? If so when? Dear Cheryl, I will try to transfer the doc to the IDN Wiki over the weekend. Given the shortage of time (the deadline for the comment is on 4th Dec), I think it is worthwhile to schedule a single topic call to discuss the paper for the ALAC. I suggest 2nd Dec (Tues) 14:00 UTC may be a good, as it give the list a time to look at the doc over the weekend, and enough time for me to make further edits and circulate final revision on the list before 4th Dec. I am not sure how about to setup the call tho so I would appreciate some advise/assistance. -James Seng On Thu, Nov 26, 2009 at 4:08 AM, <langdonorr@gmail.com> wrote:

Hello James, Thanks for starting this discussion with your draft paper. I would like to comment on one issue: 2) Additional to Topic 2: Should the IDN ccTLD string be related to the territory name? Rationale: ccTLD should be use related to country code. For example, and no offense intended by the example, .tv should not have IDN .Television via IDN PDP process. A/ Your example is a very good one if you write television in another script like French "télévision" or Chinese (from Google - unfortunately I don't know Chinese) "电视" B/ Anyway I guess we want to say here via ccNSO IDN PDP process. Because .tv registry can apply for .television using the gTLD (future) process.
