APRALO Hot Topics WG Mailing List
Dear APRALO Hot Topics WG Members, I would like to inform you that the APRALO Hot Topics WG mailing list, apralo-hot-topics@icann.org<mailto:apralo-hot-topics@icann.org> is now created and ready to be used. Looking forward to your valuable inputs! Thank you. Kind Regards, Yeşim Nazlar
Dear all Thanks to Yesim for setting up this group and to Silvia for all the help! Thanks to all of you who have volunteered to help out in this task. I suggest the following as next steps. 1. Resources For reference, our Wiki is available at https://community.icann.org/display/APRALO/APRALO+Hot+Topics+2019 2. Action Items As we have discussed several issues already, here's my suggestion on the next step: Nadira has kindly set up the draft Google Form-based survey that we will be sending out to the apac-discuss list. Our immediate task is to complete the survey form. For this, I'd recommend the following process: a. Cheryl, as the senior-most amongst us (and an expert in all things ICANN), to suggest any additions or deletions in the policy topics, by directly editing the survey form (assuming Cheryl has the free time to do this!) b. Justine, who has kindly volunteered to add a one-line description to each policy item, to complete this task, again by directly editing the form c. Once this is done, the rest of us can suggest any additional topics over this list, and once there is a rough consensus, Nadira can edit the form to include the item d. The link for editing the survey form is: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12CREhNUXGUChJksUQD_T1NhwerGfB4p0ZlltfhForUU... While all of us have edit privileges, I'd recommend that we do any substantive modifications after we have consensus on this list. e. Before we send out the form to the community, we need to do a few rounds of testing. The link for testing is https://goo.gl/forms/0fzZSeXTWKUjoXp73 Pls note that we will announce the opening and closing of testing rounds on this list. After the testing is over, Nadira will purge the test submissions from the output spreadsheet, and then we will open the survey to the community. I'd also like to propose a section towards the end of the form where we ask the community how they are presently getting policy inputs (for example from ICANN website, CPWG, ALAC/At-Large meetings etc) and how we can improve such knowledge transfer, but I will propose this later after the basic survey form is completed. Any other suggestions and comments are welcome. Thanks again, and with kind regards, satish On Thu, Dec 6, 2018 at 4:34 PM Yesim Nazlar <yesim.nazlar@icann.org> wrote:

Dear All, Thank you Satish, Yesim and to all contributors so far. Although there are 2 questions in the survey about issues of the Internet and technology trends. I think and in order for APRALO or the RALOS to be productive into contributions to ICANN policy development/comments process it would be better to narrow the scope of APRALO's work to ICANN policy related issues. Hence I suggest removing those 2 questions and direct the community input on Hot topics in relevance to ICANN. Does anyone support this move? Hi Nadira With respect to the questions in the Google Form, had two suggestions: 1. Under the Capacity Building perhaps training and mentoring should be two separated into two sub points. (Training can be done in a group, while mentoring is normally done one to one or imparted to two to three people.) 2. An alternate suggestion to the last question: Any suggestions to increase engagement of ALSes? And if you would like to edit the form reflecting this change. Please, can you also edit the last question per your rewrite. I have added one-liners where I can (hopefully I have correctly understood what the suggestions relate to) but I'm having some difficulty working out: 1. Why geoname TLDs falls under Domain Name Policy Areas while "New gTLD Subsequent Rounds" falls under Cross-Community Topics? 2. Whether "New gTLD Subsequent Rounds" needs to explicitly refer to things like Applicant Support Program, Community-TLDs? 3. What "Domains Anti-Abuse" actually means and how is it not part of CCT? 4. How DNS Security and Abuse is disconnected from DNSSEC? 5. Which aspect of Human Rights are we referring to? 6. What an "Accredited ALS Individual Member" is? 7. What is the difference between "ALS Representative Member of APRALO" and "ALS Member"? a. Cheryl, as the senior-most amongst us (and an expert in all things ICANN), to suggest any additions or deletions in the policy topics, by directly editing the survey form (assuming Cheryl has the free time to do this!)
b. Justine, who has kindly volunteered to add a one-line description to each policy item, to complete this task, again by directly editing the form
c. Once this is done, the rest of us can suggest any additional topics over this list, and once there is a rough consensus, Nadira can edit the form to include the item
The link for testing is https://goo.gl/forms/0fzZSeXTWKUjoXp73
Pls note that we will announce the opening and closing of testing rounds on this list.
Thanks again, and with kind regards,
satish

Hi Justine, We simply can remove all the classification of the preliminary suggested topics. What would be good if you check all these suggested ICANN related topics below to (edit/add/delete) in order to reflect possible topics APRALO community be interested to handle. Out of the this WG both Cheryl and you are the most experienced in the various policy discussions. - *ICANN Policy priorities in relevance to APRALO:* Geographical names Competition, Consumer Trust and Consumer Choice DNS Anti-abuse DNS Security and abuse Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) and Universal Acceptance DNSSEC New gTLD Subsequent Rounds gTLD Registration Data (EPDP) * ICANN's Accountability and Transparency Regarding the Internet Governance section and trend emerging sections we can either remove both questions or select and edit the topics to make it related to what At-large/APRALO engaged in. As for your the membership questions, I used Satish's exact words. 6. What an "Accredited ALS Individual Member" is? It is like you, a member who applied to be as an individual member and you went into the process to be accredited. 7. What is the difference between "ALS Representative Member of APRALO" and "ALS Member"? The accredited ALS org, assign their official representatives (usually 2) to be on the APAC discuss list. As for the ALS member, someone who was a representative but his term is over and chose to stay in the list or even an ordinary member from any ALS, this survey will be shared with them to engage them or make them aware of what APRALO are intended to do. I hope this is helpful Nadira On Thu, Dec 6, 2018, 21:14 Justine Chew <justine.chew@gmail.com wrote:

My proposed one-liners indicate my reading and support of selected topics
as a starting point. If no one else has a better idea of the description-less topics, then I would suggest we consider removing those on account of duplication? That would be the easier way out.
Regarding the Internet Governance section and trend emerging sections we can either remove both questions or select and edit the topics to make it related to what At-large/APRALO engaged in. I think those are fine as they are except my earlier comment on the topic of Human Rights. Are we talking about the impact of ICANN's internal policies and procedures on human rights? Or say the narrower remit of Freedom of Expression angle within New gTLD Subsequent Procedures?
As for your the membership questions, I used Satish's exact words.
6. What an "Accredited ALS Individual Member" is? It is like you, a member who applied to be as an individual member and you went into the process to be accredited.
I am an (accredited) APRALO Individual Member not an *ALS* Individual Member - I understood individual membership and membership in an ALS to be mutually exclusive, so what bothered me is the combined use of "ALS" and "Individual Member" - seeing the present options I would have selected "Other" to describe myself.
7. What is the difference between "ALS Representative Member of APRALO" and "ALS Member"? The accredited ALS org, assign their official representatives (usually 2) to be on the APAC discuss list. I wonder if "ALS Member Representative to APRALO" might be a clearer designation (while retaining "ALS Member" as is). In any case, I thought Satish had simplified the choices to just 3 or did I misread his earlier suggestion?
I hope this is helpful Nadira

If we can frame all the suggested topic within ICANN/DNS merits then that
would be great to keep.
As for your the membership questions, I used Satish's exact words.
Sorry, hear they are not Satish's exact words, I tried to compile the
different discussion and the points that I wanted to address.
Here we can keep Satish's words
"APRALO accredited individual member "
7. What is the difference between "ALS Representative Member of APRALO"
and "ALS Member"? The accredited ALS org, assign their official representatives (usually 2) to be on the APAC discuss list. As for the ALS member, someone who was a representative but his term is over and chose to stay in the list or even an ordinary member from any ALS, this survey will be shared with them to engage them or make them aware of what APRALO are intended to do.
I wonder if "ALS Member Representative to APRALO" might be a clearer designation (while retaining "ALS Member" as is). In any case, I thought Satish had simplified the choices to just 3 or did I misread his earlier suggestion?
Sounds good suggestion, it is now reflected on the form.
I hope this is helpful Nadira

Dear all
Thanks to Yesim for setting up this group and to Silvia for all the help! Thanks to all of you who have volunteered to help out in this task.
I suggest the following as next steps.
1. Resources For reference, our Wiki is available at https://community.icann.org/display/APRALO/APRALO+Hot+Topics+2019
2. Action Items As we have discussed several issues already, here's my suggestion on the next step:
Nadira has kindly set up the draft Google Form-based survey that we will be sending out to the apac-discuss list. Our immediate task is to complete the survey form. For this, I'd recommend the following process:
a. Cheryl, as the senior-most amongst us (and an expert in all things ICANN), to suggest any additions or deletions in the policy topics, by directly editing the survey form (assuming Cheryl has the free time to do this!)
b. Justine, who has kindly volunteered to add a one-line description to each policy item, to complete this task, again by directly editing the form
c. Once this is done, the rest of us can suggest any additional topics over this list, and once there is a rough consensus, Nadira can edit the form to include the item
The link for testing is https://goo.gl/forms/0fzZSeXTWKUjoXp73
Pls note that we will announce the opening and closing of testing rounds on this list.
Thanks again, and with kind regards,
satish

e. Before we send out the form to the community, we need to do a few rounds of testing. The link for testing is https://goo.gl/forms/0fzZSeXTWKUjoXp73
Pls note that we will announce the opening and closing of testing rounds on this list.
Thanks again, and with kind regards,

Dear all Here's a request to the members of this group who have not taken the survey yet: please do take it and report back to this list how long it took you (in minutes), and if there are any other issues that you see. The link to the survey is https://goo.gl/forms/0fzZSeXTWKUjoXp73 The reason is that most people who have taken the survey so far have been also involved in the development of the questions, and therefore they tend to finish it (too) quickly. We need to have a more realistic estimate of the time it would take for a person encountering the questionnaire for the first time, so that we can put in the estimated time to the email to be sent out to the community. Please consider completing this task today. Thanks and regards, satish
Hi Satish, I took the survey in approximately 4 minutes but my lingual level is fluent and it could have taken more time for others upto 10mins. I wonder if we could have the survey in multiple languages but feeding into the same background spreadsheet. I took the survey on my cellphone on purpose because that's what we use most of the time. The response check boxes for rated questions page did not fit in unless scrolled. This is minor detail but may prove useful. The issues presented do not have details or links to details etc assuming members may already carry background knowledge on the issue. That would be an over assumption. Overall the experience was quick. Thank you team Fouad On Sat, 8 Dec 2018, 11:03 am Satish Babu via APRALO-Hot-Topics < apralo-hot-topics@icann.org wrote:

Apologies for the late response...just returned from travel.
The form looks good to me. Two minor comments: (a) We seem to start abruptly at the beginning of the form. Perhaps a word of greeting or thanking the user for the time would be useful; and (b) In the final page, where "OTT" is mentioned, we should perhaps make it "OTT Services".
Otherwise, it looks good! Thanks to everyone who contributed!
Let's leave it open for a day for the others in the group to comment and also to test the form.

Dear Cheryl, Dear All contributors, What nice in our region is the energy that we have and our spreading timezone, by the time someone gets up from sleeping finds the discussions have been implemented and ready for the next step. Thank you all, Here is some edits I did. - Since all questions are set as required I added the following to the first question: (Accredited Individual Member type "unaffiliated") - I added in the first section a request for the name but kept it optional (because we find some respondents wanted to let us know that they took the survey) But, when I tried testing the survey to estimate the time, I found the Form still wanted my name as required even if I set this question as optional. Any insights on this problem? - If I understood Cheryl correctly about the "thank you", I added the thank text -below- at the last section. But since I didn't take the survey maybe the thank you that Cheryl put comes after the responded hit the submit button. Hence the last text I added should be deleted. "APRALO Leadership Team is thank you for the time you've taken in response to this survey." - I removed all the responses Here is the link of the survey for quick access https://goo.gl/forms/0fzZSeXTWKUjoXp73 When we run the survey, we as WG, would be good to share this survey personally with 4 or 5 members from APRALO member or from ALS active members. This will help in our wide reach of the survey. Best for the day, Nadira On Fri, Dec 7, 2018, 07:12 Satish Babu <sb.inapp@gmail.com wrote:
