Re: [APRALO-Hot-Topics] [APAC-Discuss] Survey: APRALO Policy Hot Topics for 2019
Dear APRALO Hot Topics Working Group members, As you know our task is not ended, it would be great to work in encouraging APRALO community to participate. If you're the ALS representative do share Satish's email to the mailing list of your members. So far we have only 22 responses and most of them the member of this working group. Also, if you know any other APRALO members pass this survey to them. Thank you in advance, Nadira On Sun, Dec 9, 2018, 07:59 Satish Babu via APAC-Discuss < apac-discuss@atlarge-lists.icann.org wrote:
Dear APRALO Community,
Greetings!
It was decided in the ICANN63 meeting at Barcelona that the five RALOs should identify their regional policy priorities through a bottom-up consultative process. The priorities thus identified were to be consolidated at ALAC level and fed into different policy and policy support processes such as CPWG, Capacity Building WG and ATLAS 3. For us at APRLAO, this process would also provide a snapshot of the policy priorities of our members and the Asia-Pacific region. The findings of the survey will be shared with the community at a forthcoming monthly meeting.
Accordingly, APRALO put together a group, based on an open call for volunteers, to work on the task of capturing policy priorities from the community. The group has worked hard over the last two weeks to identify topics, create a survey form, and test it out. On all our behalf, I'd like to thank the group members for their time and effort (Details on the group is available at the Wiki Page at https://community.icann.org/display/APRALO/APRALO+Hot+Topics+2019). Thanks also Staff for their support throughout this process.
The survey will remain open for two weeks (06:00 UTC on 9 Dec 2018 to 06:00 UTC on 23 Dec 2018). The link to access the survey form is https://goo.gl/forms/0fzZSeXTWKUjoXp73
Everyone on this list is requested to take the survey (it takes just 8-10 minutes to complete). ALS Leaders are requested to share the link with the members of their ALS.
Please let us know if anyone has any difficulty in taking the survey. We hope that you will use this opportunity to provide us with your inputs.

Hi Anupam, Thank you for your email, We can discuss the extension during APRALO monthly meeting to bring the attention to those who are not in this WG. The Staff will send a reminder at the beginning of the week and we will see the responses. Yesterday, even I'm not my ALS representative, I forworded the email to all the members in my Chapter. I hope it might encourage the representative or the members to respond. On Fri, Dec 14, 2018, 05:05 Anupam Agrawal <anupamagrawal.in@gmail.com wrote:

Hi All, After closing the survey, and removing the duplicate responses, we have 30 respondents. *The topics that got the higher priorities could be considered APRALO hot topics* *They are:* - DNSSEC including DNS Security and Abuse (24 respondents) - ICANN's Accountability and Transparency (20 respondents) - Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) and Universal Acceptance (19 respondents) - Competition, Consumer Trust and Consumer Choice (17 respondents) - Geographic Names gTLDs (17 respondents) The file attached is the summary of the survey that I put together because the Google Form pdf file (also attached) summary was not clear. We need some of the group member to compile the written responses. Taking this opportunity to wishing your all a happy 2018 ending and peaceful successful 2019. Best wishes, Nadira

The other issues of interest were online trust deficit; access and affordability; inclusion and participation; encouraging next level leadership; Enhancing Gender diversity in terms of participation and in the policy process; local or regional policy issues that can affect domain names and numbers; Ethics in AI, Machine Learning; development of cost effective solutions for developing and under developed countries; concerns of divided internet; encouraging startups to opt for domain name reseller business; understanding of the domain name business and New GTLD Application Process. Q What challenges have you experienced in engagement and involvement in ICANNs policy process? (Optional) The challenges that were listed in terms of engagement and involvement in ICANNs policy process which were cited, include high demands on time; steep learning curve; unfriendly process for newcomers; lack of information, trainings and knowledge on ICANNs policy process; need for mentoring and guidance; sustaining interest especially of newcomers and young people; challenges of language; few topics may not be of interest to ALS’s, need for more involvement of ALS and their leadership in the process; limitation of fellowships; the online wiki’s quite difficult to understand and workon and complexity and length of the policy documents. Q In what ways could the engagement of ALSes and APRALO Members in At-Large's activities be improved? (Optional) Suggestions share by ALSes to improve their engagement in At-Large's activities include having an effective and complete closed loop of communication, resourcing and engagement support; enhancing local level engagement and capacity building activities through local leadership with a bottom up approach; encouraging local leadership to be more active; having guides for new comers; encourage new voices in the discussion; providing remote mentorship and support; simplifying the policy discussions so that new members can understand the process; limit policy discussion to one during monthly calls and explain the same in details with open Q& A; encourage ALS representatives to take an active role in passing ICANN knowledge and better understanding to their communites; come up with out of the box suggestions on how to conduct policy development discussion and bring diversity to the discussions and support SIGs for more engagement of ALSes. Dear all Thanks for the work done on the Hot-Topics initiative, which is now coming to a close. However, before we close, we have one more step, which is to prepare a 2-3 page document on the findings. In the last RALO Leadership call, we were informed that AFRALO had done their hot topics document pretty well, and that it would be good if we could 'package' our findings in a similar way. The AFRALO document is available here: https://community.icann.org/display/AFRALO/HOT+TOPICS+Implementation+Working... I have started work on it by creating a new document, which is available here, and put down the summary of our findings into it: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ak56aVRPpl1Z5HM290EZc_DjR7sxldlNpPHwYSEt... (Document edit is enabled for all) What we need to do now is to highlight any regional specificities for the policy topics. For instance, for Geographic Name gTLDs, is there something that we wish to highlight as something unique to Asia-Pacific?
From previous feedback, two areas that I'm aware where APAC may have special interest are IDNs and Application Support (under new gTLDs). Is there anything else we would like to add to this document?
Once we have the document ready, we can use it for inputs to CPWG, ATLAS3 or for general outreach & engagement. We can get staff support for the final layout, formatting etc. Thanks and regards, satish
