Mails going through the list can have a "reply-to" header added so that choosing "reply" (_not_ "reply all") to them sends your response to the list rather than the original sender. Under the current setting it is tempting to do "reply all", to respond to both the list and the sender, but then you're just repeating the original excess Cc's.
Evan A lot of mailing lists have that setting and it works very well. You can still see the original sender address, so if you really want to email then offlist or whatever you can still do it.
