As I announced during last week, there was a technical failure in the supply chain at Adigo, which did disrupt one call on one day, after which time they moved to a redundant backup system. This is the meltdown Cheryl's referring to.
Sorry, missed your email about that, where was it sent? Still trying to find my way with all the lists etc. Thanks.
As I said, we really aren't going to find perfection in teleconference providers, what with voip calls and mobiles in remote locations on bridges, and adding in simultaneous interpretation.
Muting in Adigo (rather than using mute on the phone) should prevent any noise from a bad connection. Least that's how I understand the teleconferences normally works. Not an expert though.
Finally, we're really under the gun here as I believe everyone knows, being down a member of staff during a really busy time. May I suggest that this discussion be tabled until a later time,
Sure, I wasn't suggesting ICANN stop all work and focus on teleconference solutions.
at least?
"at least" ?
We are not in any position to go into detailed analyses of teleconference providers now. I would venture to say that the vast majority of the volunteer community in At-Large didn't get involved in policy development at ICANN so they could become involved in analysis of telecommunications providers, either.
Teleconferences are essential to our work, an essential resource, and the system used now doesn't seem to work as well as it should. Let's try and improve it and make our policy work easier. Not something that we need to make a great fuss about -- but it shouldn't be hard to get a snapshot of what's used with what success. I'll take it up after Cairo.
We've (staff, at least) got to concentrate on supporting upcoming meetings in Cairo. I would also say that a very full plate of policy issues will be on everyone's plate within a day or two with the release of New GTLD documents of considerable size as well as a document on the At-Large review from the BGC-ALRWG.
Good to hear. Thanks, Adam

(moving this to the global list)
Hi Nick
Far much better than the former operator. During board meetings last year was terrible!!! This was a real improvement.
Vanda, thanks this is good to hear. But if Cheryl is saying "ADIGO was in total meltdown" and two people complained about not being able access the system from Europe, then it's far from perfect.
Sure lot's of different kind of connection introduce noises and depend upon the people is, connection becomes awful. Today at LacRALO was almost impossible to hear Jose Luis, but afterwards it became much better. We have improved our calls going mute when we need to be at mobile, getting out of the call when we are the source of noise in favor of the colleagues etc. That is the reality and we need to survive with this, but we do improve a lot the issue calls in ICANN the last year ( I am in this game for almost 9 years now)
You're right. ICANN must organize hundreds of hours of teleconferences each year, teleconferences are essential to policy work and any inefficiency a drain on resources. Learning from what works best would seem sensible. Perhaps time for an ICANN community wide study?
Adam
Best to all
