WebWatch's statement on the GNSO's gTLD report, so perhaps discussion in LA is the best way to resolve this. I simply intended to try to bring a really bright guy into the fold to be helpful to the ALAC (and to me), not to create a debate about what his title should be, procedure, rules, etc.
In my experience, actually doing work has counted for more in the ALAC than titles. (After all, what was my title when I did those drafts last month?) "Other guy from consumer.org" would be a quite adequate title to show up and get to work.
I agree - also the "other appointments" section was originally meant to deal with appointments that the ALAC was requested to make to other working groups (eg Whois task forces), not to create new positions out of the blue. So I think that there is no need for formal appointments other than those that are formally required. The need might arise if you then want ICANN to pay these people the expenses for attending ICANN meeting, but then, I would rather suggest that ALAC + staff work out a clearer policy on [who and how gets to decide] who gets travel funding on the At Large budget. -- vb.
