Dear ALAC Colleagues! Warm greetings! First of all, I would really want to take the opportunity to Congradulate both Wendy and Vittorio with the Board Liason election results. Now, after you both know the results, you should keep in mind that this is a new beginning for both of you and your feelings should be great – be optimistic regarding the fact that whatever happens, happens for the best. For Wendy this is a great opportunity to put in practice the Diplomatic vs. Legal vs. Negotiation and Representation Skills at the ICANN Board level; for Vittorio it is a great opportunity to take advantage of the knowledge and skills already acquired at ICANN Board level for both personal and professional purposes. Second of all, no matter how many discussions there have been recently on ALAC around the election results, I propose that we do not discuss it any longer as we can not change that (we can not change what happened 5 minutes ago) – it is PAST; but we can change the FUTURE and think about Strategic Planning vs. Implementation of concrete initiatives and many more!!! Wishing you all a great week ahead and looking forward for the online meeting tomorrow! Many thanks, Vittorio, for your hard work, and Committee members and at-large participants, for your confidence in me.
I look forward to working with you all to represent the diversity of interests and opinions within At-Large. I hope we'll be able to advance common interests in making the at-large public full participants in ICANN policymaking.
Wendy, you should immediately get in touch with Diane Schroeder and arrange your travel to the Board retreat of October 4. Also, please let me know who is replacing me in the policy work on the RAA submission and amendments. The deadline is today, but I have obtained some more days from staff. The document is basically ready, but there is the need to incorporate the round of comments to the second draft, and get it approved by the Committee according to its rules of procedure. It would be hypocritical to thank the Committee for expressions of appreciation for my work, as there is none - so I will not be doing it; I will rather offer my apologies for such a failure in matching the spirit and expectations of the Committee in these few months. But I do wish good luck to the ALAC; it will now need to grow beyond quarreling on procedures, staging elaborate elections for positions, regularly asking for additional budget, and blaming ICANN staff and leadership (or the Board liaison...) for whatever failure. I have seen several bright and enthusiastic people among the newcomers, so - after the process of getting rid of old timers is concluded - I think that the objective can be accomplished successfully. Thus I look forward to dense and fruitful policy discussions on the ALAC list and on all the RALO lists. Regards, -- vb.
