Re: [Bc-outreach] Review: Outreach Proposal for ICANN 59
Dear Jimson and other colleagues from the BC Outreach. I have added Omar as he is interested in joining the Outreach WG and brings in a great opportunity for the BC in the CASA states. I have suggested that we not try to address India in these states, as many of the ISPs from India are engaged in the ISPCP via one or two key associations and we should focus instead on the businesses from the other CASA countries, building from Afghanistan outward. I have made some edits on the great proposal that you presented, Jimson. I did speak with Chris Mondini recently, regarding the NRI linkage that I bring and I suggested that Andy and Jimson and I have a working call with Chris and Riccardo not only about ICANN59, but perhaps more strategic collaboration in the next 4-5 meetings. but let's start with J'berg. This great proposal does count on some ICANN resources, so that needs to be nailed down this next week. room for the meeting, remote participation and then collaboration during the broader lunch event if Chris Mondini is organizing that. I did propose that Omar and Lawrence, who are my mentees and myself as mentor in the pilot mentoring program could play a small mentoring role with all identified business leaders. I think I can speak for all of us, as the mentor that we would also provide a couple of collateral documents. I'll engage with Lawrence and Omar on those. I have made some suggested edits and I hope that we all agree that this is a unique opportunity. Getting a few NON Business speakers will make this richer and more useful to the business attendees. I can reach out to Patrick and Dave or to the SSAC regarding a possible speaker, once you give me the go ahead, Jimson. I did see your criticism, Lawrence and I do not in any way support that statement. Building on established an identified contacts across multiple countries is how we have gained engagement from Sri Lanka, ASOCIO, and Afghanistan. I did spend many years on trying to engage with South African business, in my earlier life, and we need the colleagues from ITA and their engagement with AfiCTA to gain attendance from South Africa and across the region. So, I really appreciate this approach and endorse it. I count on you to join in and support this proposal and you and Omar and I will discuss how the on boarding project can contribute. We have a lot of work to do to make on boarding realistic and this can be a pilot for us. I'll send you and Omar some suggestions on documents we can contribute as part of the on boarding pilot. I want to mention that at IGF58, that I had over 100 participants at the informal NRI event that I organized [and special thanks to Lawrence and Jimson and Omar for their engagement there!] and perhaps we look ahead, we might think about more strategic alignment with not only the ICANN Fellowship and Next Gen [we have not done anything yet to try to really use that program for the benefit of the BC Outreach], but also how we advance the work of the NRIs, who always have at least one and often more sessions about ICANN. I am very excited but this much broader event that we have done as Outreach and thank you, Jimson, for designing a great program. Please count on my support in any way, even if that means "moving the chairs". [😊] M
All, Thanks for some great comments. A couple of quick reactions: 1. Great idea for a small subset of us to do a call with Chris M. I think that will help to plan longer term. 2. In terms of ICANN resources for the Joburg BC meet, I checked in yesterday and we’re still waiting to find out if we can get the space the day before. Chantelle said no decision has been made as yet. We will push hard to get the day earlier as discussed. 3. In terms of a BC mentoring program, I think this can be helpful. I have no objection to starting small, but think it might be wise for all of us on the Outreach team to agree to take on a couple of mentees/new members each. Let’s structure this in such a way as to get as much learning as we can out of it. Perhaps Marilyn, you can suggest some targets/structure for the mentoring approach given your efforts to date? 4. In terms of having non-biz speakers, I am not against but not completely sure of the value. I think we need to be clear in how that is good news for them/clear value. 5. In terms of AfICTA or any other partner org, I hear you Lawrence but agree with Marilyn — let’s be open to working with all appropriate local private sector groups. Given Jimson’s role, AfICTA seems like a perfect fit (and we’ve been working with them for years) but nothing limits us from working with others and we should strive to identify more appropriate partners where we can — especially in areas where we aren’t strong. I think we can get the mix right where both the partnering org and the BC come out ahead in any given program. 6. In terms of NexGen and Fellowship, 100% agree — lets continue to build on this and emphasize to ICANN the importance of work to make global south businesses especially a part of these programs. We can help them and vice versa to make the ICANN investment pay longer term dividends. I look forward to getting the report on the Afghanistan program. thanks, Andrew. Here are a few ideas to consider as we are moving closer to the ICANN59. On item 2, I just want to share a challenging situation that I encountered for a different group at last ICANN meeting. ICANN now charges $800 for a meeting room, UNLESS sponsored as part of ICANN. I was panicked until I figured out how to advance this sponsorship and the meeting that I organized had over 100 attendees. [also Jimson, Lawrence and Omar from the BC but in their NRi roles]. BUT I could not have spent that $800 for the NRIs. The BC might be able to spend that $800 if it brings us all the resource support that we need, so I do not want to rule that out. BUT, as this is a constituency event, this charge will not be relevant, I think, as I understand the new meeting strategy. It is going to be a space and support issue, I think and also we need to see how the agenda may be evolving and the needed speakers, which I turn to Jimson for. On item 3: happy to work with my two mentees for a sort design and ask all Outreach committee members to each take on at least 2. that as my intent and I echo your suggestion, Andrew. I'll give a short outline for an approach and invite Omar and Lawrence to comment on my suggestions. 4. MSC: Why I suggested some non biz speakers: any one from business from Africa is going to want to also hear from some others other than just business colleagues. We can keep it limited, such as SSAC and perhaps also invite Markus Kummer, the Chair of the WG on IG. We need to remember that this is Africa and that the agenda should be designed by Jimson, with input from the local team from ITA, so that the S.African business leaders know that they are important and that others think that they are important. And recognize that their views are critical. For instance, .africa is a continent wide topic of interest. But the proponents of other relevant city gTLDs may bring in some businesses who are interested now in whether this is a safe space to register. 5. Agree with Andrew. And noting that we need to be collaborative, not competitive as we have very much a need to engage more participants from all the developing countries, not only Africa. Thus, we should welcome Omar's interest in joining the Outreach WG. He will bring in a strong interest from Afghanistan and from CASA countries. 6. Agree with you Andrew, and perhaps for ICANN59, we could invite the NexGen for an informal "exchange of views" with the Outreach Committee. Just an hour of some of our time. It is a short meeting so might now work but it might... be an idea. and Next Gen [we have not done anything yet to try to really use that program for the benefit of the BC Outreach], but also how we advance the work of the NRIs, who always have at least one and often more sessions about ICANN.
I am very excited but this much broader event that we have done as Outreach and thank you, Jimson, for designing a great program.
Please count on my support in any way, even if that means "moving the chairs". [?]

Dear all, I spoke with Riccardo early yesterday, and he had heard a response from the Meetings Team. I had sent this response to Jimson and Andrew separately yesterday—apologies for the delay as this email apparently was buried in my inbox. After his discussion with the Meetings Team, he told me that the possibility of extra days for outreach prior to the meeting (i.e., June 25) will most likely not happen. They are quite strict for events staying within the parameters of the meeting dates. However, the Meetings Team has written to the SO/AC planners who are working on the block schedule, mentioning all possible ideas for outreach events that came from the community - including the BC’s. So, the GNSO planning team is aware of the BC’s request and there might still be a possibility to hold a half-day during the week (TBC). A final option is that there is one hour of outreach time scheduled for every morning. Chris/Riccardo’s GSE team can help the BC organize a breakfast on a day when some important/interesting community discussion is happening so local business people can be invited in the morning to discuss ICANN and the BC over breakfast and then they can see ICANN policy work in action on the same day. What are your thoughts on doing a breakfast one of the days during the week, based on Riccardo’s suggestion? Let me know if any of this is unclear, and/or if you have any questions.
