My goodness, something the UK does right! I can hardly beleive it!! Not only can we have two passports (well, not everone, you do need some excuse like "the Indian Visa Process is awful") but when you do apply for renewal of a passport and the old one is cancelled (like in Belgium), any unused validity is added on to the new one (i.e. it gets renewed for 10 years plus five months). Hey, with the recent screwups, we have to take comfort where we can!! On 09/10/16 00:14, Peter Vergote wrote:
If I can just add a quick note in that perspective. Not all of us are accepting the visa troubles linked with ICANN57.
Our GM wanted to attend this ICANN meeting but immediately changed his mind once he got aware of all the admin stuff (especially avoiding more brutal language here) involved.
For myself, at this point it is still very unsure whether I will attend. My passport is valid till end of February next year. It might that my visa application gets refused because it has not a full 6 months validity at the moment of entering the country. I’m absolutely not going to throw away my passport and file for a new one (Belgians can only have 1 travel passport, so if you apply for a new one, the old one needs to be nullified) to attend a meeting of 1 week that is scheduled to take place 4 months before my passport expires.

I know I sound like a broken record on this topic, but this is an aspect of what I mean when I say that ICANN needs to embrace a culture of human rights. We are NOT the United Nations which must overlook such things in a misguided over-respect for national sovereignty.
There is, of course, a spectrum, but we should definitely prefer to hold meetings in places like Canada and Germany than in North Korea.
At heart, ICANN is just a California private sector company. And it must ensure the safety and well-being of all its participants equally, and in particular to ensure respect of what we in the UK called 'protected characteristics'
But the Board will have some excuse. They always do.
And the community will, in all probability, ultimately tolerate it, like we did with the visas.
