Example of ICANN study based on ICANN's broader mission
Dear CCWG-AP members and ICANN staff, I thought to share with you below the announced study on the Digital Economy in the Middle East conducted by ICANN Middle East Global Stakeholder Engagement office. I think this study works as an example on the debated issue of the range of projects that AP fund could support. This study, doesn't support directly ICANN core mission on DNS but it handles the broader digital economy which I believe if is away with some margin from ICANN core mission. An issue to think about. Just for the record Many members of the community have expressed concern about this report for exactly those reasons. Interesting I though the study will focus on DNS marketplce as our LAC region study ( The DNS marketplace in Latin America and the Caribbean) Our was quite relevant to understand DNS industry in our region and was full focused on ICANN core business. James, thanks for sharing this, BUT, actually I challenge the use of the term" many members of the community", without facts. In fact, SMEs from business users found this report both interesting and useful, to the point that the BC@ICANN featured the report in our Newsletter. If you have a list of "many members of the community" who object, do share that with me, and I am happy to meet with them, and you at ICANN60 in a small discussion about why such studies are so useful, sub region by sub region, or regionally and how this helps to inform the larger environment that ICANN must exist within. I am very happy to meet with you and any other who decry such useful reports while we are there. So, I look forward to meeting with the many members of the community who decry having factual information. For me, I may have even authored the statement: Facts are our Friends. Some may not like the facts, or even want to debate them, but let's start always with an open mind to how we learn from facts. For me, I think the report is great and I am promoting the idea of a similar report from the CASA countries. Hello Nadira, Thanks for sharing this, I think it's a good thing for Internet industry players to occasionally produce papers that serves as advice/indicators to policy makers on how to better improve Internet development; an improved Internet and digital literacy will better "indirectly" support the core mission of ICANN. Should ICANN be contributing to such effort? I believe they should. Perhaps ICANN may want to just keep that at a global level as much as possible. Hi Seun, My point is not about the project itself, but about ICANN jurisdiction and its position of funded projects that doesn't comply with its mission. This issue is still under discussion at the ccwg-AP with ICANN legal but until today there is no clear position. Discussing the legal issue of this project might help in the debate to finalizing this critical point. On Fri, Oct 13, 2017 at 9:02 PM, Seun Ojedeji <seun.ojedeji@gmail.com> wrote:
