I currently have several .com domains that I utilize for personal/business reasons. I have invested in using those domains for over a decade. An increase in cost to utilizing the domain names that I have had for so long would be greatly detrimental and I'd have to go through great efforts if I were to switch to another top level domain since many of my services are tied to those domains. If renewal switched from say $10 a year to something unfeesible I'd no longer be able to justify keeping my domains. -- David Mitchell

I am the owner of several .com domains. I am a full-time student, an open source developer, and independent artist. An increase in .com pricing would disproportionately affect me and my peers. We rely on .com to give ethos to independent projects, which make sites more accessible to users who don't trust or understand vanity TLD's. Please help protect independence, open source, and accessibility by not raising the price of the .com TLD. Ben Schenerman

To whom it may concern, I am writing in opposition to the agreement between ICANN and Verisign which will allow up to 70% increases in the cost of .com domain names over the next decade. The internet should be a place where anyone can find a voice, and that includes being able to stake an individual claim to personal or business domain names at a cost reasonable for all. With third-party resellers, domain squatters, and especially since the introduction of new TLDs, we have seen that without healthy controls, wholesale domain registrars and resellers have no qualms about raising domain costs per TLD to untenable "market rates" which effectively freeze out smaller players and which ultimately will quash the innovation and egalitarianism that have been the internet's hallmark and the driving force that has placed ICANN in its vaunted position. Were this releasing of the hounds of unfettered, greedy, capitalistic impulses a singular instance, it might remain unremarkable. However, given several recent, troubling moves by ICANN to remove restrictions on traditionally well-controlled markets (as with the whole .org debacle), it is no longer reasonable to expect or to trust that ICANN or its designees will "do the right thing" for the health and welfare of the internet. Therefore, I implore you to consider the historical forces that have brought us to this point, and to not bend to the disgusting prostitution in which the media suggests ICANN is participating. Honor the internet's true strength—the hundreds of thousands of small voices that have made and continue to make it what it is today—a great global marketplace of ideas and information.
