According to Verisign <https://www.verisign.com/en_US/domain-names/dnib/index.xhtml> there are 114M registered domain names in 2019. The wholesale cost today is $7.85, which provides $1.13B revenue to Verisign. Verisign made $518M income available to common shareholders (earnings) in 2018, and is on track to make $646M in earnings in 2019. That's over 50% net profit. Vote no on this amendment, because 50% net profit is enough! Thanks, Rob

I'm not in agreement with changes that are going to significantly increase costs for registering domain names. I've heard your proposal could result in up to a 70% increase over 8 years. That's not acceptable. Any increases should follow cost-of-living rates (at the most). Allowing these price increases will push more and more smaller and personal sites away. While theoretically price increases should make squatters think twice about holding a large portfolio, the history of these individuals and businesses show they are willing to take long term losses for the potential of a extortion level payoff from a startup or corporation (just look at the proportion of unused domains registered in the 90s and 00s that can easily sell for lower prices but are simply retained as part of a portfolio in case a 6 figure deal comes along). Yes there are other TLDs but people inherently trust and rely on the recognition of .COM to drive traffic. Compromising a free and open internet in service of increasing Versign's bottom line runs counter to ICANN's purpose.

Raising prices for .com domain names will greatly impact small start-up businesses. The proposed rate of increase can be very debilitating to many. I personally am trying to be available to people in need and trying to keep costs down. It is important I have this option available to enable access to me and my business. Any amount of increase at the start of a business can be detrimental, but the rate proposed would certainly impact negatively. Thank you for considering the public view. Let's keep the net open to all. People of low means should be able to afford a .com domain and contribute as equals online. Keep the original dream of networked democracy alive by keeping .com domains accessible and affordable to all.

This in essence allows a single vendor Verisign to control the cost of usage for the entire internet. You should have at least two vendors and better yet three competing for any proposal. You also have one point of failure using just Vendor Verisign (choke-point) - shouldn't you have at least two with redundancy between them. The internet has evolved to be be sole of open source and world communications. Don't rock the boat - it might tip over - and then we will need a new one.

I am an individual, not a business empire, who owns a .com domain. The price increase on .com domains sets a bad precedent for the price of all domains in the future. While big companies would have no issue paying for these price increases, individuals and startups may not be able to, especially if this pattern continues (as it very well may). I am against your decision.

ICANN was created in part to introduce competition between domain name registrars, but now ICANN itself is at the heart of the problem, without considering any input from Internet users on these critical decisions. There are four main concerns with ICANN's decision: 1. Price Increases It is not clear how much of these price increases registrars will pass along to consumers, but it is likely that most of these increases will be paid by domain name registrants. The contract does allow for other price increases for certain extraordinary situations, so it is possible prices could increase more than anticipated. 2. ICANN Will Receive an Extra $20 Million With the contract changes, Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's initiatives regarding the security and stability of the domain name system. There is no explanation why Verisign did this, how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent. 3. Verisign Can Operate as a Domain Registrar The new contract will allow Verisign to operate its own registrar, except for selling .COM domain names itself. To circumvent this, it is also possible that Verisign could act as a reseller of .COM domains, through another registrar. This result is that the company that controls almost 80% of the registrar pricing for domain names will compete directly with all domain registrars. This is a conflict of interest. Verisign's registrar could also use its dominant position to charge higher prices to consumers, while at the same time raising registrar prices. 4. ICANN Ignored Previous Comments As detailed on Standing Up to ICANN to Keep Domain Prices in Check and pricecaps.org, over 3,500 comments were submitted in support of price controls for the .ORG, .INFO, and .BIZ TLDs. Only six comments supported removing price controls. ICANN discounted the comments that were in favor of maintaining price caps. A number of the comments were submitted using an online tool, which caused the comments to be discounted as "spam" by the ICANN Ombudsman. ICANN removed the price caps, primarily relying upon a biased preliminary analysis from 2009 by an economics professor that did not reference any data. These changes will have a significant impact on the Internet for years to come, and only ICANN and Verisign have participated in this decision. Oppose these changes.
