I would like to comment on the proposed price increase for the .com registered domains. The increased cost of living affects everyone at some time. Whilst starting an internet based business is cheaper than a traditional “bricks and mortar” business everyone still needs to work to a budget. Increases in wholesale prices are inevitable however the amount of 7% per annum for many years is much higher than most global economy’s CPI increases. Possibly a better outcome would be to either cap this increase for a set time or reduce the annual increase in line with CPI. Surely economies of scale would offset this increase. The news of domain price increase is a big trouble for small business owner like us, since it will burden the costs and negatively impacting my business, clients and on return you since several business like mine might fail soon with these costs increase. My personal feelings about these decisions and proposed changes with escalating outcomes are a disgrace and an insult to the user community. These proposals should be reconsidered and modified. What's happening? Last month, ICANN, the organization that oversees domain names, announced significant changes to the contract it has with Verisign, Inc. who operate the .COM top-level-domain (TLD). ICANN made these changes in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. Although ICANN has a history of making similar deals behind closed doors, and also of ignoring unified opposition against such action, we are focused on leading the fight against price increases that will harm our customers (and the Internet as a whole). This is a crucial time to raise our voices given that .COM domains make up 40% of all registered domain names online. What does this change mean? Wholesale registries charge Namecheap a set fee per domain name per year. According to this new agreement, Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and the increases don’t stop there. This will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. Why is ICANN doing this? Alongside these contract changes, Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. So, what can you do to help? These changes will have significant impact on the Internet for years to come, and only ICANN and Verisign have participated in this decision. If you want to make sure your voice is heard, let ICANN know how you feel about their recent decision.

Hello, As the holder of a .COM address and a small freelance photographer, I find it rather galling that such changes would be proposed and agreed without any sort of consultation process or period. The internet is supposed to be a democratic spaced used by and for all. Steps like this undermine that. I hope you will reconsider. Thanks, Dominic Cabot

Giving .com management to a private company and giving them the allowance To raise prices is a bad idea from ICANN. Ever heard of highway 407 just north of Toronto? It was built by the government then sold off to a private company. That company has been raising prices, nickel and diminishing Canadians out of large sums of money for decades. Now the highway is so expensive only the elite can afford to use it. You will price small businesses and entrepreneurs out of .com domains if you give Verisign the option to raise prices. This is a bad idea.

I depend on using .com sites for my livelihood. I have a few personal sites, but also several business sites. These sites are for people to find and reach me for my services. If I increased my prices by 70% and gave a sweetheart deal to one of my vendors, cutting out the other vendors and ignoring the end clients, I would be out of business. In this ‘looking-out-for-only-me’ world, you need to step up. You need to do the right thing. You need to remember the internet’s origins. Don’t cut people out of the equation and then screw them over so you can make an extra dollar.
