Dear ICANN, The idea that VeriSign could even consider raising prices reeks of corruption. The .com registry prices are already at least double what they would be if there was an open market. Even most registrars make less than $3 per domain, and they have to charge credit cards, maintain individual accounts, and provide customer service to end users. They also often include tools like URL forwarding. There is no way even the current $7.85 can be justified outside of a monopoly. Raising that further is out of the question. The discussion should be how much should VeriSign be forced to lower the price if they want to keep the contract.

To whom it may concern: I am writing to express my profound disapproval of the proposed Amendment 3 to the .COM Registry Agreement. The proposed amendment allows for a possible 70% (or more) increase in wholesale .COM domain prices over the next 10 years. That is ridiculous and unconscionable, especially since there is no reason whatsoever for such a drastic price increase. Furthermore, the whole arrangement looks like straight up bribery. Verisign pays ICANN $20 million, and (surprise surprise) gets a ton of new benefits in return? Well that is the very definition of corruption. Do not enact this amendment. This proposal reduces the accessibility of domains for people all over the world. It provides Verisign with a disproportionate benefit, while providing ICANN little support in return. Part of a healthy internet is keeping domains affordable for the every day person. I whole heartily appose this amendment. Passing this amendment will undermine public view of ICANN. I strongly oppose the proposed changes to ICANN's contract with Verisign. ICANN is supposed to be a protector of the public trust and fairly administer the domain name system. The changes to the contract would hand Verisign a virtual monopoly on .com domains. Not sure what is going on besides Liberal greed just like the pharmaceutical companies. I have a few recreational sites left and love them. I am actually looking for a place to host them that has good support. It seems everyone is just trying to price themselves out of this world. A lot of people I know. some that had 600 to 1000 domains just started letting them expire. I know my friend and I had about 100 combined and we are down to less than 10 now since Namecheap increased their prices. So I imagine if this happens people will tighten things up and use the bare minimum and only hold on to just what they actually need. Just like taxing the shit out of corporations until they are forced to leave the country to service. There are other ways to incentivise so things grow instead of killing everything like Democrats do. Dear ICANN, I recommend against allowing any price increases for domain registration. The cost of serving and registering gDNS domain names has gone down, not up. Verizon is making a transparent money grab and you are making yourselves appear complicit. I am very sincerely worried that if you go down this rabbit hole you will end up neutering ICANN entirely and force people to use alternate gTLD domain name service approaches that will dilute ICANN's authority and ultimately fragment the internet. This is bad for everyone, having a central authority to resolve disputes is very desirable but if you price everyone out I am confident people will work around you. This will further dilute our ability to disrupt foreign propaganda and keep the internet accessible to all, which directly aids authoritarian regimes. And the appearance is that this is just a money grab, which makes it even more embarrassing. I hope that this is not your intention. Please keep big telecom from further putting a tax on using communication tools despite their costs going down over time. Hello, I would like to voice my opposition to Proposed Amendment 3. I believe that the global DNS registration system should be run primarily as a public concern. The only entities that stand to benefit from the proposed arrangement are verisign itself, at the expense of the public. These price hikes will impact the millions of small, independent businesses and developers that rely on the system as is to make their livelihood. Further, this could prove yet another point of pressure that convinces a small business to make their online presence exclusively in the Facebook walled garden and eschew the web itself. The web, and global DNS, were envisioned to be run for the public good, and they SHOULD be run for the public good. Deals such as this are an abdication of that mandate; short sighted profit chasing at the expense of all else. Please do not adopt this proposal.

I'm concerned about the proposed changes for a three primary reasons: 1. No transparency into use of the $20 million ICANN will receive If ICANN needs $20 million, then share a plan on what the needs are and how it's going to be used. As ICANN is a non-profit organization, information should be shared openly. If this is for hefty raises for ICANN upper management, I strongly recommend that you reconsider. 2. The large price hikes over the next four years Increasing wholesale prices 7% each year will cause .com domain prices to become prohibitive to a large segment of individual and small business domain owners. This should not be a money-grab, and ICANN should ensure that the for-profit companies they work with are not price-gouging customers. This looks exactly like a way to pad Verisign's bottom line numbers, to the tune of upwards of $800 million. Compared to the $20 million ICANN will get, this is a bargain for Verisign. As stewards for TLDs, ICANN should re-evaluate the rate hikes. 3. Allowing Verisign to act as both .com TLD operator and domain registrar. This is clearly a conflict of interest, and allows Verisign to effectively run in a monopoly-like fashion. This shouldn't be allowed. Period. I hope these comments are taken into account, and weighted accordingly.

Hi there, There seems to be both a distinct lack of accountability and a worrying conflict of interest in the new Verisign contract that encourages profiteering in .com domains over the next ten years at the expense of domain leasees without any real justification in terms of real costs. The conflict of interest comes in the form of Verisign's significant payment to ICANN; the lack of accountability is in what this money will be used for and how other stakeholders (i.e. leasees) will be protected from negative consequences. This all comes across as extremely shady and likely bad for accessibility of Internet resources over the next decade. ICANN has a responsibility to all Internet users to make reasonable decisions in the management of the critical shared resources it controls. If the current situation results in needless expense of .com domains, I predict that the central role the .com TLD has enjoyed to date will fade away, and this can only hurt ICANN and other players in the long run. Please come up with a better solution that builds in some kind of protection to convince everyone that the tail isn't wagging the dog here. Special interests inevitably play a large part in the management of our shared Internet infrastructure, but that infrastructure should not be used as a cudgel to exploit Internet users with. best regards, Luxagen

I admit the price of domain names has remained relatively cheap since they were opened up to individuals many years ago. However, I believe that increasing the price of domain names makes the barrier to entry too high and cause harm to the internet as a whole over the next 10 years. With more people turning to “free” services instead of creating their own Web presence, they will be more beholden to the interests of the companies who build these networks on top of the Web. This will continue to give more power to companies who will increasingly dictate what is shared and with whom. Please keep domains affordable for all so the Web itself can continue to flourish. We are an all volunteer group that organizes neighborhood festivals, community dining out nights, and parks cleanups. We went with Namecheap for our website because it's affordable. Dear ICANN Team, Greetings: I wish to submit an objection to the proposed Amendment 3. It is not clear to me why Verisign should be allowed a monopoly on the most important TLD in the internet, and why ICANN, as steward, should be removing a price cap that protects small business owners and individuals, both Domestically and Internationally. I am writing to ask that you please limit the cost of .com domains. Keeping domains low cost allows individuals like myself to own and operate different websites. If you continue to let prices climb all domains will just be limited to companies, as they will be the only ones who can afford them. Thank you, Shawn

Hi, hereby I object to your decision to make .com names more expensive. It's really shocking, instead of making it easier and more available to the public, you'll make it more exclusive. Please stop having closed door meetings without input from major players. Also, I oppose the new VeriSign deal which in effect means .com pricing can go up by 70% over the next few years.
