Hello, I am a small developer who also runs a bunch of small websites like www.radiantguild.com. I am studying software development and because of this study, I can only just hold onto what I have now as I don't make anything from my websites as it is all passion projects... I am writing this email to express my concerns and how this will not just negatively affect me, but also others like me, who don't have the money that big companies would have. If this amendment came into effect, over time the price for .COM domains can and will increase and people like myself will find it harder to buy these domains and keep them because we are running our small business or small passion projects using the bottom of the barrel, leftover money that we have. For me, I started the Radiant Guild as a site for a bunch of friends who I care about, and while I am not the one paying for it, one of my friends is. They are like me and have other more important things to pay for like college fees. I also have a domain for myself, for my portfolio website when I make it eventually... And by jacking up the price of the .COM domain, it becomes more expensive for me to even have a portfolio. It may not seem like a lot... 7%, sure... But when you add that 7% up, It gets expensive over time. As someone else in their comment said, ~$8 turns into ~$24 (195% increase by 2041) and the benefit we get from it is nothing... There is nothing new being added to the .COM domain that gives us a reason to justify paying more. It's just more money, in their pockets, for nothing more than they are doing now... Now sure, it could be 1% or 0.5% increases... But let's be real, that's not what is going to happen, this is a big company that holds the internet in their hands. If you give them a way to make an extra ~$16 per domain, they will push that as far as they can go, they won't increase to make an extra $1 per domain (~$100+ Million more per year) they will push it the whole way (~$16+ Billion more per year) for no extra work. (If this happens, I am sure that .COM will cost $40 a year in 2080) I hope you consider not giving them the power to make this price increase as it will hurt all the small people like me.

I am a registrant of several .com domain names and am strongly against the proposed price increase. The current rate is already excessive for the minimal service provided and it is corporate greed on the part of Verisign (only) to want to increase .COM prices for their own benefit (only). No justification has been provided for a price increase and ICANN should not be entertaining such an unsupported money grab. ICANN should continue to govern the domain name system in the public interest and not pander to commercial interests.

Hello, Please reconsider your decision to raise /.com/ domain name prices consistently and significantly over the next seven years. The Internet was meant to be a democratizing space, giving access to knowledge not only to elites but, more importantly, to people who otherwise lack any means to educate themselves. The "digital divide" has already given the lie to that hope. This move will only further expand the digital divide, enlarging the gap between the "haves" (who can afford the proposed price increases) and the "have nots" (who will be unable to afford those increases). Capitalism works best when it supports a community, and fails worst when it simply enriches CEOs and shareholders. Please think about the social impact of your proposed changes. Team, I heard that you are looking to get into an agreement with VeriSign that will likely increase the prices of .com domain names considerably over the next decade. I think this will impact the adoption and growth of the internet and make it less accessible for people who want to go online. It will also prevent a lot of people from renewing domains they own for existing websites because of increased costs. In other words, it will kill a large part of the internet, which none of us want. Hi, I’d like to know why you feel it’s so important to be so secretive about this proposed agreement. Because you’re being secretive it makes me: Trust you less by 100% because you feel it’s necessary to raise prices that don’t need raising to literally throw money around simply because you don’t have a plan as to who will handle it, where you plan to use it and how. Add the lack of communication and this proposal is so far into the left field and even smelling foul. Why would anyone support such a sloppy and obviously extremely shady business deal? Who will believe anything you say now after this criminal venture? I demand transparency, honesty, and communication from you. " to preserve and enhance the security and stability of the Internet" " the domain name marketplace had grown more dynamic and concluded that it was in the public interest that, among other things, Verisign and ICANN may agree to amend the .COM Registry Agreement to permit an increase to the price for .COM registry services" It's strange how it seems like the public (re: see all the comments submitted) seem to think that it's NOT in our interest as domain name holders for ICANN to agree to allow the monopoly Verisign has to profit even more. I do NOT agree with this amendment. By increasing the price of .COM you are making it harder for less-privileged individuals to obtain a domain name and creating a strain on the public. This is not in the public interest. This does not enhance the stability of the internet.

I have been a consumer and creator on the internet for over two decades. The internet has only become more open and accommodating to people over these years. Getting a domain name for a business is the first step for any business to register its online presence. Many of these businesses are small. A good number of them are reluctant to get online, but agree to do it after seeing how it’s helping other businesses. Increasing the prices of .COM domain names, which are the fundamental domain name for businesses, takes internet back by many years. It will make the internet less attractive because many cannot afford these high costs. As a leading authority in the internet, ICANN is setting a wrong example for other internet-enabling companies to follow suit and increase prices. Please stop this. Don’t take internet back to the dark ages.

Increasing the price of domain names at this rate certainly will inhibit the business of me personally, of many business startups in my country and in other developing countries. Increasing domain name costs will lead to increased hosting costs, bandwidth costs are out of the influence? The price increase was mentioned just in time when the whole world was afraid of the danger of 2019-nCOV virus spreading. It will certainly cause many economies to suffer the most, especially in Asia, which is the region with the top internet development. I and many of my clients have shared with us about the difficulties when all everyone stopped working for 2 weeks and continued at home for at least the next 1 to 2 weeks. In my opinion, the author of the price increase initiative should replace this decision with any other initiative that will more positively affect the regional and global economic situation, helping the community to overcome this problem early in the time to come. Not only was there zero consultation but the period to comment is too SHORT. People who own their own businesses already have enough extras to pay for. This wont effect large business, this is a direct threat to SMALL business owners. How long until you charge whatever you want, whenever you feel like it? Hello, I am a strong proponent of a free and open internet. Recent moves to monetize domain registry serve nothing but greed, and the world already has more than enough of that. Similar to pharmaceutical companies exploiting their monopoly-like position to massively inflate pricing of necessary goods, I worry that allowing profit driven entities to control pricing for domain registry will only serve to inflate prices with absolutely no investment in quality to justify it. Further, accepting a sizeable donation in exchange for allowing this reeks of corruption, and only serves to further undermine our collective trust in ICANN’s ability to be an effective steward of essential infrastructure. There is more to this world than profit. You are making short-sighted decisions that have the potential to be destructive and harmful. Please reassess the value of funding your initiatives vs the very real possibility that you’re needlessly harming the greatest thing about domain names—almost anyone can afford to buy one and use it to achieve awesome things. Hi - As an owner of multiple .com domains, I disagree with the direction ICANN is taking with Verisign. Ultimately, my disagreement centers around two points: 1. Verisign should *not* be able to operate as its own Domain Registrar - Even though Verisign will not be able to sell .com domains directly, should Verisign choose to partner with a specific registrar, that partner would get preferential pricing/treatment - As the controller of .com domain prices, Verisign should not be anywhere near the market of selling these domain names 2. The rate of price increases far exceed standard inflation rates. There's really no reason to increase the price of a digital good. Since any operating costs of Verisign to operate the .com domains may increase along with inflation, I don't see why the 7% annual rate is the chosen number. This is not to mention that, as technology improves, one would expect operating costs of Verisign to decrease as well I hope that ICANN will not ignore my comments to this proposed amendment. >From the outsider, this looks like collusion between ICANN and Verisign. The only beneficiary of such an agreement is “Verisign” - a commercial company. I think this proposal goes into to wrong way because it will end in an increase of fees to the registrars and then to the customers. Some statistics show it might increase cost to up to 70% in the next 10 years. .com is a great way to make the internet safer as it a great solution to spot serious domains and websites. Almost every big company is using a .com which means more security and less scams. If the fee increase, more and more people will start using less common extensions and this will make the web unsafe because scammers will be harder to spot and unfair because big companies will still own .com domains and small companies will look unsafe because they made a choice based on this wrond decision. Icann does a great job and need money to run its operations but this is not a great way to do it. Keep .Com low so you will keep the web Fair and secure. I don't believe I could afford. Com domains anymore if it raise too much and I don't think I'm the only one.

Greetings, I have been using the internet basically since its introduction to the public. The value it has brought is through the democratization of knowledge, information, and more. If there is one thing that history has taught us is that the moment one person, one company, one organization, to claim too much control, too much power, that democratization is, at best, put in jeopardy. By enabling VeriSign to have such control... and the ability to increase prices as they see fit... they become a limiting factor to those of us who which to have a site with a .COM domain. I have such a site. I don’t make money from it, but it is a way for me to share my work, my passion, my dreams, with others. Unlike in the old days, we have to by a number of domains just to protect ourselves and our identity. If such prices were enacted, I could be priced out of owning some or all of those domains. Controls that limit such actions must be implemented. This deal should not happen. ICANN has a responsibility to all of us in keeping the Internet open and accessible to everyone who wants to have a website. In this case, by not making this deal, and by putting protections in place to prevent such deals and such moves to gain unfair control over the Internet. Regards, Michael Brodt

As a small business owner who performs all of my sales online, this is just one more thing that will hurt my business. If you increase the price of the .com domains, it will force those of us who have a domain in this area to seek other domain name extensions, causing confusion for our customers. Even if you were to provide a free forwarding service, all the work that has gone into becoming established and trusted under the .com domain will go out the window once I and others are forced to seek cheaper domain name extensions. Customers will wonder if they are really at the right landing page and this will not promote customer confidence. My pre-printed business cards will be useless as well as my stationery. All affiliate links and other supporting advertising will be broken. Regarding Proposed Amendment 3: Respectfully, please do not allow .COM price increases. Verisign expects at least $1.125 billion revenue in 2020 even without price increases. Thanks to the significant upgrades in web technology and database management, both the .COM and .NET registries could be profitably managed for less than half the cost. The leadership of ICANN should reject any measures that harm small businesses and entrepreneurs. Under the proposed changes, within 10 years, .COM domains could cost approximately 70% more than the current price of $7.85. This is neither consumer nor business friendly. Reject this amendment.

Both the money going to ICANN and the proposed increases by Verisign seem very unreasonable to me. Also the whole agreement seems to have been done out of the publics eye, ostensibly because ICANN and Verisign knew it would look bad, and it does. Please stop this money grab by both parties now and think about what is good for the average person instead of your big business.

Hello, I have been informed that last month, ICANN announced significant changes to the contract it has with Verisign, Inc. who operate the .COM top-level-domain (TLD). Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 year. I've been told that this will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. If there is truth to this, I want to share that I strongly discourage an agreement that allows for this drastic increase in price for .com users. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains.It is not fair to allow Verisign to have open reign in raising prices for .com registrations.
