With a monopolistic advantage, there is no incentive for Verisign (or any monopolistic company) to maintain or reduce prices for the individuals or small businesses who own those addresses. The cost of registering a domain name is already high enough. This is just another way to make money off of everyday working people in order to make the middle class poor. As a small business owner, I am highly against an increase in the fees associated with my .com domain names. This would definitely cut into my profits - with no payoff or reward. Please do not sell out to special interests just to make a quick buck. The internet is already becoming more restricted every day. We are living in the age of internet and instant communication. When the internet was in its infancy and no one knew what it really was, it was understandable for domains to potentially be more (or less) expensive. I can currently purchase a .COM for an extremely affordable $8.88 from NameCheap and with the era we are in everyone, even just casual users, can have a reason for purchasing a domain! Whether it be for tech, the next big startup, or even just a simple personal blog. If we increase prices, this can hurt the freedom of having a domain gives. A domain is more than just a personal spot on the internet or a large brand. Big or small, it is a voice. Owning your own domain can be empowering, it can let you speak freely to a dedicated audience, or be a home for business. The possibilities are really endless with one simple string of text.

How about we not allow unfettered price increases on domain names. There's already a monopoly on the top layer, and if this continues, I think some letters to our government representatives may be in order. Add underhanded dealings with Verisign, to an already monopolistic market, and the expectation is that the public won't push back? $20M from VeriSign was all it took to remove price caps, and allow them to endlessly increase the pricing of domain names? That's not shady at all, right? The fact that this has already come into question, and that you have already ignored the comments of the .org initiative, indicate to myself, and those like me, that government intervention may be necessary to maintain a reasonable, and fair, internet infrastructure. I generally disagree with government intervention, but when there's underhanded, monopolistic dealings afoot, I find it's warranted for the government to oversee the company. Good luck maintaining your stranglehold, if you want to play the capitalizing game. You can't pretend to be a neutral arbiter when you're taking dark funds to influence financial decisions, against the general public's interest.

There is nothing about this agreement that appears to be done in the interest of the consumer, and it looks like this is entirely motivated by greed. Verisign gets more money and pays ICANN $20 Million in exchange, yet there are no clear outlines for how this $20 Million would be spent. It's pretty clear that Verisign also does not have the consumer in mind, as allowing them to operate as a registrar themselves is a conflict of interest. Dear ICANN, I, a humble user of the internet and domain name owner, object to Proposed Amendment 3 to the .COM Registry Agreement. ICANN is a non-profit organisation which has been given a duty to act on the best interest of the internet and it’s users. This amendment poses a serious risk to the internet, allowing ludicrous price increases of .com domains – 40% of all domain names. This is not worth $20 million. This will cost dearly, and the most unjustly effected party will be the individuals and small businesses who cannot afford to pay more and more for their portfolios, shops and services. Hi, I just learned about the potential raise of the .com domains due to deal made between the ICANN and verisign without asking for the public and end customer opinion. There are no technical reason that .com domains exploitation should be more expensive. Due to the improvement in technologly performance, it should actually be the opposite. This action will punished millions of organizations that have an established .com brand, but not necessary the means to maintain those domains due to price increase. I feel that ICANN has not used an open process to adopt this amendment. I am suspicious that the additional money to be paid to ICANN by Verisign is intended for uses that are not clearly identified. I fear that costs will increase inordinately for small operations like mine to keep a .COM domain name registered, and that there will be no recognizable benefit to me or to the broad, global Internet community. Hello there, I have just heard from namecheap that there will be regular price increases over the next 8 years regarding .com domains. It appears that the proposed price increases are somewhat arbitrary, wit no justification being promulgated to support said price changes. As a .com customer and user I come under the customer contract agreement and that agreement states that as a customer I have a say and a right to know when it comes to deals as it will impact me. You have done none of the above. Not only have you broken this agreement you have also overlooked the laws set out by the UN. I do not agree to the increase to the .com prices and if you do this to me then you have just forced me into something against my will which is, at its core, a breach of human rights as outlined by the EU and UN. We received an email from our registrar NameCheap explaining the "deal" Verisign and ICANN have worked out to benefit themselves and subject business owners like myself to pay higher prices for our domains. We would like to be on record as being totally 100% against this type of deal and would like ICANN to revisit these decisions along with the top registrars like NameCheap to work out a Win-Win solution, allowing us all to maintain Trust within the IT industry. "Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years" While I certainly understand the need to raise prices to meet business demand, there is a limit to what that demand commands. As a small business owner, I have to be conscious of every dollar spent. A website is a necessary business expense. The domain should not be a deal breaker. ICANN's decision to make this deal with Verisign was done without notification to the ICANN community. One of the most important rules of business is to know your customer. This decision not only appears that you do not know your customer's, you simply do not care about us. That is tragic. Please limit the price increases. Give small businesses a chance to succeed. The ability for anyone on the internet to be free to go out and create their own website at an affordable price should be protected. The allowed increases by Verisign to the .COM top level domain prices pose a serious threat to this. ICANN clearly needs more money for system infrastructure, but allowing Verisign to provide this funding is not worth all of the strings attached. Increasing the 18 cent ICANN fee per domain to something more sustainable (like a few bucks instead) and asking dues from it's shareholders should be the way to raise money for more infrastructure, not letting Verisign have a largely unregulated Monopoly on internet domains.

Increases such as are proposed, will mean that I will purchase and use less and less domains, instead of increasing them and I am sure others will do the same, therefore cutting your income! I therefore recommend that you keep any increases to an absolute minimum in order to keep your income stream steady and increasing - and not decreasing as they surely will if you go ahead with the increases as proposed! I have 2 domains and I recommend namecheap to all my business affiliates. Because we redirect our given long website links for our customers. With namecheap we are able to customize our own link and redirect to the corporate link. This allows our customer to see our branded name while connected with ease. We usually are already paying for the corporate link..plus name cheap domain. Please do not drive up rates.

I’d like to express my concern and disapproval regarding the potential for .com domain names to increase in terms of registration cost. While I can understand the desire to increase the cost for registering .com domains, .com domains undoubtedly provide more potential visibility for smaller entities. If you want to encourage people to use other top-level domains, then you should do so by ensuring that the prices for those other top-level domains DECREASE to the point that .com domains are less attractive from a cost perspective. You SHOULD NOT increase the cost of .com domains to make them less accessible to smaller entities, however, as that only encourages abuse by larger entities with more resources by forcing smaller entities to compromise on visibility. I would, however, be in favor of .com price increases on the basis of how many .com domains a single entity owns to discourage domain squatters/scalpers from sitting on a bunch of domains for financial gain. Furthermore, I’d be in favor of .com price increases on the basis of total revenue so larger entities pay more for .com domain registrations while allowing smaller-scale companies and individuals to continue having access to the .com top-level domain. This would negatively affect people who, like me, are from developing countries, where our economies are small and that access to a domain name could become extremely expensive, condemning many to lose the domains they already acquired.
