I believe that raising prices on .com TLDs is necessary, but the amendment allows raising prices too quickly, and should provide better caps on pricing adjustments. Furthermore I do *not* support Verisign receiving any more power over .com domains, nor its ability to gain even more control prices for .com domains. To Whom It May Concern: As an owner of several .com domains, I am greatly upset by the proposed changes ICANN wants to make to the fee structure. If .com domain prices can grow by more than 70% over the next decade, I may not be able to afford to run my businesses and will need to let my current domain addresses expire, in favor of other options. This would ultimately result in less revenue for Verisign. I oppose this amendment and urge you to reconsider. This amendment will prohibit some business owners from having a web presence. The cost of domains has already increased significantly over the past several years, in many cases, through a host of suspect business practices. ICANN’s stated mission (motto) is “One World. One Internet.” Making changes that continually increase the cost of individuals participating in the internet seems to be contra to this stated goal. ICANN, I would rather see you put legacy TLDs out to competitive bid, as has been suggested of you by the United States Department of Justice. What you would see is a monumental influx of cash to operate ICANN for the better good, and to continually allow registries opportunities to innovate. However, the current system is broken, does not encourage innovation by the registries themselves, and only encourages corruption and back-door deals which make registries more money at the expense of the general public. $1.2 billion for Ethos capital to buy .org? Why is ICANN not properly putting the legacy TLDs out for competitive tender? These continual "cash grabs" just go into deep pockets (Verisign, Ethos, PIR), are taken from registrants for no good reason. ICANN should be the one getting paid for this. ICANN should not be the evil doer for allowing for profit monopolies to take over on the .org namespace, raise prices on .com namespace and ruin what worked so well in the early 2000s. Imagine a world where ICANN did not hand out presumptive right of renewal contracts, and you could periodically keep the registries in check by auctioning off the management of them for the next 6 or 10 years! The legacy TLDs should also NOT be allowed to sue you -- their regulator. This is one of the biggest issues you have. ICANN is not strong enough against these massive for-profit companies. I suggest you take these issues directly to the Department of Justice. And to the European Union. ICANN should be honest and say "we are a captured organization" and we need help getting out of the rut we are in today. You really need to be courting competition authorities to help fix the massive issues ICANN has created over the last 5 to 10 years! There are outside parties who have the power to undo what your prior counterparts did. And then ICANN can once again get back to what it should be -- a respected organization that actually serves the public good, and not just a few insiders who run the entire show. P.S. Please do not allow the price charged for .com domains to go up by as much as 70% over the next ten years. This represents a flax tax on people creating websites. The cost of a domain represents a much larger expense to small owners than it does to big owners. If the price of .com domains is allowed to rise, it will be insignificant for large companies and very expensive for small companies. To raise revenue, please identify ways to do so which are progressive in the sense that they wouldn't hurt small owners more than large owners. Thank you.

I understand that there is a new agreement that Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and the increases. This means .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. I also understand the contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to voice extreme concern over the proposed change related to .com registry. Without additional information, the public is only made aware that ICANN is allowing a business to raise prices, and that business is proposing a large donation back to ICANN for infrastructure. I do not expect to be concerned with how the funds are spent, but without further details there is no understanding. This reflects extremely poorly on ICANN as an impartial governing body, not because anything wrong is being done but because without details and accountability there is no platform for trust. Many of us with a .com address are just barely holding on with existing prices. To see prices rise 8 out of the next ten years is untenable. Since this is something that hasn't changed in so long, none of us smalltime operators have a plan for dealing with this raise. If there is any way to mitigate this for smaller domains who can't afford it, that would be so important for the survival of small businesses, who are already threatened by the giants. Thanks, Wendy

I am a registrant of a .com domain name. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. This is not in the best interest of the internet and the world. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Do not take an opportunity for short term greed over long term stewardship. Hello, I've grown up on the Internet for the past 30 years. The fundamental spirit of openness on the internet has truly changed my perspective about how large systems and organizations can operate. It is an idealism which has manifested very well on the world wide web. As far as I can tell the decision to allow Verisign to operate as a domain registrar sounds harmful to the price of .com domains. But the price alone is not as important as the ability for other companies to operate competitively to offer consumers freedom to choose among many options. In this crazy world of capitalism, please play fair. It is unwise to take Verisign's money in exchange for making them a registrar. Also, I will be the first to admit that I don't understand all of what's going on, but the whole thing sounds fishy to me and I don't like it. ICANN you can do better. Hello I understand that a new proposal regarding .com pricing that could affect all COM domains - up to 40% of all registered domain names online. That .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. I understand Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. How is this fair not checking in with the entire community before making a change that will so significantly impact .com domain registrants? I hope you will reconsider and involve your community. Real people have many domains they register and are trying to maintain and this would hit them harder. Lets try to not be like the rest of the government and not raise fees for no apparent reason. My son recently started a business selling graphic art tees and sweaters. He is only 18 and soon to graduate high and works a part time job on the weekends. He just got his website started and can not afford to pay any extra for his .COM. He is starting his business on a show string budget and every dollar counts. I to have a .COM and I have not even got my business started I’m in the building process getting all my affairs in order before I can actually begin making money if my .COM price goes up I can’t hold on to them until I am ready to get my business going. Please reconsider this price increase it will hurt the small business community the start up part of building a business is the hardest part and for young inspiring minds that want to create a space online this will hurt them. I hope this decision is made very carefully. I am not questioning the need for price adjustment over time but I'm very interested to know how the new value (7%) increase is being calculated? I would love to see the justification for such an increase in the prices. It feels like going back to the '90s when the domain prices used to be very high. I want to urge ICANN to remember that they are managing a public trust, for the common good - not a profit-seeking enterprise. As such, transparency in the decision-making process (including motivations, funding, and budgets) and responsiveness to the community (see e.g. the price controls debacle, where the vast majority of the community supported price controls, and their voices were dismissed because an online tool was used to submit them) are of critical import. Verisign has a checkered history when it comes to operating ethically in the TLD space, and ICANN has a responsibility first and foremost to the community, *not* to commercial DNS operators. It makes little sense to remove one of the few checks against Verisign’s behavior by allowing them to operate a TLD *and* become a domain registrar in that same space (either directly or via an intermediary). Please deliberate and act on behalf of the Internet community as a whole; non-profits and individuals have no more primary representative in this process than ICANN. Sincerely, Scott Francis

Everyone on the internet will be affected by these changes, and as a serial register of domains for small projects and as a freelance developer whilst being a student, increasing prices of these domains will affect me directly. We're at a stage in the world where the internet should be as free and open as possible - and allowing Verisign to operate as a Domain Registrar alongside allowing wholesale prices to increase go directly against what is and should be the correct decision for bettering our global society. Please do not ignore these comments as you did with the org/info/biz changes, it's plain dishonest.

I am saddened by the news that you are going to be jacking up prices for .com domains and by the sounds of it to the point that people like me will inevitably need to give up our websites and personal domains because of it. I get it that elitist pricks want to deprive everyone else of pleasures large and small and limit any worldly benefits to only a small percentage of people who can "afford it" but shame on you for ruining the internet. I think that if I can not participate in the internet by having my own domain then I will just boycott the entire internet all together. If I can no longer display my photography portfolio online then I no longer wish to shop online or read internet news articles either. I am not willing to pursue additional income streams just for the privilege of paying you a fortune to have a web domain. For me growing my online business is crucial but as a bootstrapper i always look for cheaper price and so are the other thousands of entrepreneurs. Startup industry is growing exponentially and most of them are failing according to statistics. Please don't make it harder for us.
