The beauty of the internet is the ability to express yourself without deep pockets. It leveled the playing field for people with ideas and drive, but without startup capital. Pricing people out of the ability to cost effectively hold a domain while they build their system/idea will stop this creative process for a large number of creators. Please be the guardians of the internet we desperately need. Please do not give into greed. Avarice is the root of all evil.

I own many domains and do not make any money from any of them. An increase will hurt me because a small expense will turn into a large unnecessary expense. Small business will also suffer, students suffer, freelancers suffer. Please reconsider this decision. Thank you, Patricia Garcia

The .com registration service that Verisign has captured is not a competitive market. If it were competitive, then I could choose a different provider that was more to my liking even it it cost me more. That's not an option if I want to use a .com domain. Verisign did not gain control of the .com registry for any reason that should allow them to milk it for more money per domain. Given that the number of domains keeps going up and the costs to run a registry keep going down (unless the people involved are not competent) there is no reason other than greed for them to even ask for more money. The proposed price increases for .com are significant and while the stated purposes sound plausible, the justification is weak. I would like to see a more detailed explanation for why these costs are necessary and cannot be funded out of the already significant revenues raised before such a large increase is approved. Additionally, having Verisign in such a position with uneven competition should call for a detailed oversight plan. Chris

Good Day, I am writing to register my disagreement with the proposed increases to domain prices. The fact that these changes were made IN SECRET WITH ONE COMPANY speaks volumes to the lack of honesty and integrity with the whole process - especially when it affects MILLIONS of users - those who are trying to make a living online - ensuring their families are taken care of. With jobs disappearing pretty much every day due to automation, etc., many are turning to the internet to literally feed their families and keep a roof over their heads. By increasing prices so drastically over so many years, you have basically decided to take food out of children's mouths and clothes off their backs. How noble of you - NOT!! Would you like that done to your loved ones? I doubt it!! It is hard enough to start and grow any kind of business - and building a successful online business requires a LOT of training and knowledge - as well as YEARS of hard work!! I think it appropriate for you to cancel this very unfair agreement that not only lines ICANN's pockets, but also VeriSign's - thereby allowing budding entrepreneurs a CHANCE at success without undue and unfair pressure right from the initial launch of their business. Dear Sir / Madam, The potential for price hikes in your new legislation has the potential to Jack up the cost of a com domain to the $70-80 range. This puts it out of the price of ordinary people, meaning only big players / Corporations will be able to afford to purchase them. Many small businesses will end up losing domain names (& their online branding) when renewal prices start increasing exponentially. Hello, I received an email from Namecheap.com (where I purchase my domains) that ICANN made contract changes with Verisign, allowing Verisign to operate as it's own registrar for non .com domains and to increase the wholesale price for .com domains. This concerns me as it's gives more power to Verisign over other domain registrars as well as increasing the price of domains for companies like Namecheap. Of course, having a cheap domain is nice, but it’s important as a consumer to shop in a fair and competitive market. If Verisign can increase wholesale prices of .com domains to companies, fine, but to learn that Verisign will also be a registrar as well, sounds unethical. I certainly wouldn’t buy from Verisign (even for a cheaper non .com domain) if it’s simultaneously screwing over other companies. Although it sounds like the deal is done, I hope you consider limiting Verisign’s power over registrars or at least be transparent of ICANN's motives and reasons for the change in contract. I run two very small businesses and have .com domains that I use as portfolios to show work samples. I need the continuity of keeping the same domain because old clients or prospective clients (that take years to become clients) have the old address but even small price increases are a big deal because I’m not making much or sometimes losing money trying to get the businesses going. Hi, I own many .com domains. Those gave me a broad area to communicate with the world. I used them to do my business and just share the information with the world. Price was the main factor to achieve that and ICANN is doing a social service to the world. Increasing may cause indirect influences to these domains in the future. Hello, I feel, increasing prices while making such agreements with companies like verisign is not a step in the right direction. We already have a lot of issues regarding domain purchases, domain registrars are already cheating customers by reserving commonly used words in almost all TLDs, to resale at a higher price. As an organisation, you should focus on how to stop these things, but this step further encourages companies to be profit driven than service driven. Finances are an important part for any non-profit or profit making organizations, i understand being an owner of one, but these steps are not an ethical way to move forward. Let the Domain registrations be managed by people who truly love and work for betterment of internet and not just to make profits.

The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price.
