The internet is and must remain a public good. When private comes in to buy up internet infrastructure to raise prices for the benefit of their limited partners, the world suffers. Value is not created for consumers or the world, rather value is concentrated for the private equity limited partners. In the specific case of the internet, it is a public good that must be protected. We say NO to private equity appropriation of internet infrastructure, raising prices, and holding the internet hostage.

I am a registrant of a .com domain name. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. Now more than ever, an open and distributed web is critical to democracy, and decency. Raising domain costs is a direct threat to that, because it reduces the availability of domains to normal consumers, which in turn consolidates power around fewer online properties. I think we've all seen where that has lead with consolidation of personal online presences around Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Without the ability for people to present themselves in their own, personally-controlled spaces, we are all bound to play by the rules of big companies, who are driven by profit motives over all else. Hello, I am writing to voice my opposition to Proposed Amendment 3. Despite there clearly being potential financial gains to be had by raising the registration fee on .com domains, the global DNS registration system should be run primarily as a public concern. The only entities that stand to benefit from the proposed arrangement are verisign itself, at the expense of the public. While price hikes such as this likely won't mean much to the larger business concerns that buy in bulk, it will impact the millions of small, independent businesses and developers that rely on the system as is to make their livelihood. At worst, this could prove yet another point of pressure that convinces a small business to make their online presence exclusively in the Facebook walled garden and eschew the web itself. The web, and global DNS, were envisioned to be run for the public good, and they SHOULD be run for the public good. Deals such as this are an abdication of that mandate; short sighted profit chasing at the expense of all else. Please do not adopt this proposal. Best, Tae Wong Singapore

I have a handful of domains, it sounds like what you’re doing is trying to price me out of owning them. Should we start pushing legislatures to control you? Is that the only option we will have? Inflation is only going up 1% a year, how about you tie rate increases to that and not greed.

Hello, I'm adding my comment to say the ICANN should not increase the price of the .com domain because it will hurt individuals and small businesses the most. These two groups are entrepreneurs or creating jobs in their local communities. Due to that, building an online brand is important to their success. Alas, these people tend to buy a .com domain because it's the most common and trusted on the Internet. So if you increase the fee, these individuals will have to either pay more money for it, which could hurt their business budget, or choose another domain that's cheaper.
