I have been self employed for nearly 20 years. Last year, I was forced to return to the employment sector and this year, I am back at opening my business. It is extremely hard for small businesses to keep track of all of the “tiny” fee’s that pile up. Even as a volunteer for non profits, I find it difficult to get smaller companies to get connected on-line. For example, I volunteer for a thrift shop that donates all of their income to community events. Its been a struggle to get them to understand why paying for a domain and a web site is important for future growth of the company. Having access to a web site is vital for any business. We already see how google has taken away small business to funnel attention to third parties that charge high fee’s for “new clients”. One such gimmick had masked a web site to look and act like mine. When my patients called to book their appointments, they were lead to believe I had hired a new reception. Turns out, this company expected me to pay them to book my own clients by lying to my clients. As a small business, I am constantly struggling to keep up with a constant changes in technology. Another example, someone took away one of my business names and asked me to pay 250.00 for my own web site back. I told them to kiss my ass. I had another fellow do that with my first business. He actually tried to hold my web site hostage to force me to pay him more money. I also told that guy to kiss my ass. I tell alot of people that try to bully me to kiss my ass and I refuse to partake. Please, dont be like the other bullies that try and steal web sites away from small companies and force them to pay high fee’s to keep what they have already purchased. Thank you Dr. Erin T. To Whom It May Concern — We represent a couple hundred small and micro businesses and non-profits who we help keep their domains registered and working and keep their websites up and accessible to the world. The possible changes in the .COM registry are extremely concerning. Giving essentially a blank check to raise the price of .COM domain names more than 70% over the next decade would be an unfair burden for the organizations we help. Contrarily, the large .coms will not even notice such increases. Please find another way to recover these costs and keep the Internet a more level playing field for everyone. You are going to drive these smaller players into the not as well regulated and potentially harmful ‘vanity’ tlds and the public at large will lose. It is incredibly concerning that you are making these contact changes in secret. This is a big deal and if these unjustified increases come to pass, more regulation will come to this industry via government agencies and that isn’t necessarily a good move, either, but certainly would be one you would want to avoid. Hello, I'd like to formalize my objection to the increase in price of the .com domain. This is purely a cash grab by ICANN and Verisign. You ignored the comments opposed to the .org, .biz and .info price increases and said they were just space, trust me this is not spam. This is from the .com domain that I've had registered since 2001 and will continue to do so for as long as it's affordable. Once you increase the price past that I will move on to another domain, most likely one of the free or cheaper domains allowing that money to go elsewhere.

As a small business owner and domain name holder, I am writing this comment in the hopes of convincing ICAAN that the proposed .com price increases will be detrimental and wholly unjust for consumers (just as removal of price caps in 2009 despite overwhelming public comment was.) This amendment serves to only benefit Verisign and ICAAN, and places unjust financial burden on internet users! Why was this amendment created without imput from the very people it impacts? I can only surmise because you wish us to just be quiet and bear the financial costs of your lucre and dishonesty? This is wrong! In reading the proposed amendment, two obvious "why"s are left unaddressed: 1. Why is only Verisign contributing U.S. $20 million dollars? Why isn't the (increased) burden of supporting ICANN shared among all registrars? 2. ICANN has always been tasked to preserve and enhance the security, stability and resiliency of the DNS. What has changed? Why is the *additional* funding needed now? Without this information, the proposal looks like a monopolistic plan agreed to without public participation to increase revenue without justification for what the additional revenue will be used for. I have read that the changes were made in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. This is disturbing and deplorable because of contemplated price increases. Price increases by themselves are not a concern, but what is concerning is that there is no accountability for the new revenue, so potentially Verisign could use the additional proceeds to pad its profits rather than benefit the Internet community. I am a registrant of a .com domain name. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is one the THE most important organizations in the world, probably in the history so far... The lack of transparency in this recent change is seriously worrisome. Increasing price (although not quite logical since infrastructure has only become cheaper) is understandable even acceptable, but it should be highly monitored, analyzed and regulated. I would like that verisign be allowed the price increase, but constrained by economic parameters such as inflation and economic growth, they shouldn't be allowed arbitrary increases. The proposed price increase agreement between ICANN and Verisign lacks accountability, transparency and honesty. This deal appears to contain all of the necessary elements for an improper quid pro quo and could fall under a variety of conspiracy laws. I recommend ICANN slow down and provide a full explanation of the benefits of this deal and a full accounting of who will benefit financially. Also, agreeing to price increases beyond a short-term window of 3 years is speculative and foolish. ICANN should pause and think this through. Steve

I do not think that you should allow Verisign to operate as a registrar as it will decrease the competitiveness of the domain market because they already control so much of it. Additionally the maximum that you should allow the prices of domains to be increased is the amount of inflation each year (average the rate of inflation from the major developed markets: US, Europe, Canada, China, Australia, etc). This keeps the costs down to users that need it. You could try allowing a revenue based pricing scheme so that rich companies pay more for their trademarked names (Apple, Microsoft, Google, Toyota) if more revenue is really needed from somewhere. -- Cheers, Josh Smith

This is unacceptable for an organism of the importance and caliber of ICANN to do such a thing. Totally unethical, and shameful. No consultation has been done either, and no proper independent research in how it benefits the Internet and its users as a whole has been provided. First, it's extremely disappointing to learn of the increases to the .COM domains. An increase of 70% over the next decade is outrageous given the combined increases. I fully intend on supporting any class action lawsuit for price gauging. Second, it's also distressing to learn Verisign can operate as a domain registrar.
