I'd also like to see better explanation and accountability of the funds to be received by ICANN through this agreement with Verisign. I think the current structure of making people pay high prices for good domain names and making people pay again monthly or annually just to keep the names they already paid for is some what of a crime. Dear Madam, or Sir, I am concerned about this amendment to the Registry Agreement because it will affect, not just me, buy any individual who would like their own domain name. I am 100% sure that no corporation will object to the 28% cost increase every six years as they earn money off their domain name and paying almost any amount would be acceptible to them. However, there are a great deal of small businesses that would see this as a burden as well as individual users out there that have purchased their own domain name and are using it for personal use, not commercial use. Several of us have multiple domain names, if for no other reason than to protect our own names from being used to run a website. I personally have about 6 that I use to protect myself and my family while also allowing my children to be able to have a domain name that is exclusively theirs. 20 year Cost analysis: $ 7.85 / year 2018 $10.29 / year 2023 (31% increase over 2018) $13.49 / year 2029 (72% increase over 2018) $17.68 / year 2035 (125% increase over 2018) $23.17 / year 2041 (195% increase over 2018) I am aware that the 7% is a maximum per year for each of the four years and, theoretically, there could be no increase or a sub 7% increase some years, however, I have little faith on this being the norm and, most certainly, CANNOT plan on it being any less than the full 7% in any fiscal plans made. I understand it would be extremely difficult for you to create a regulation that would charge businesses more and individuals less, however, that may be what is required at this time. This would leave a loophole for businesses to have an individual register their domain name, however, no corporation of any size will be willing to leave their domain names in private hands. This would also allow fledgling businesses (aka startups) to keep their costs low at first. Remember, many businesses have been started in individual's garages. You may also assume that all ".com" domain names are used for, or are supposed to be used for commercial purposes, however, this is not the case today. If this had been defined and enforced from the beginning of the internet, this would be a non-issue, however, to start enforcing it today would cause many many individuals to lose their domains. Yes, there are other top level domains they can move to, however, that doesn't alleviate the fact that they would be losing an asset they had invested much time, money, and resources acquiring. Please keep the annual fee very low or consider a more flexible charging system for the .COM top level domain that will keep it accessible to individuals and small businesses. Domain names are a limited good created on top of a huge heap of public IP and network effects. ICANN has an effective monopoly over this good, and their fees are essentially rents (in the classic sense). Clearly, there is a lot of temptation to raise fees, and I'm sure there's a ton of rationalizations, but they're all bullshit. The cost of administering the system is close to $0 at the margin. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. I am fully against the proposed price increase. Hi there, I was recently made aware that ICANN announced significant changes to its contract with Verisign to be able to increase the price of .com domains by up to 70% over the current price over the next 10 years. This is absolutely ridiculous on multiple levels. One, there was NO transparency into the nature of this deal, and the high price tag ($20 million over 5 years??) is way too high to sit well with regular consumers. There is no explanation why Verisign did this, how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent. It seems like the parties involved proceeded in this deal not to help consumers or to help the internet as a whole, but purely to make a profit. There seems to be something really shady going on here, and I do hope that the deal does not go through and if it does, both parties are thoroughly investigated by governments worldwide. .com domains make up over 40% of the internet, and to make arbitary price increases would not only be absurd, but harmful to businesses. I am an independent web designer and developer who helps clients build their websites, including the purchasing and management of domain names and DNS services. It’s already hard enough to sell my services to small businesses as don’t always have the money to invest in design or development services. Medium and large businesses are cognizant of costs, and though they see the value of the service I provide, more price increases leave a bad taste in their mouth. To increase prices in a world where SaaS and subscriptions reign could potentially stifle not only my business, but small and growing businesses as well. The internet is supposed to be a democratic arena where anyone can build a website if they have a couple bucks and the desire to learn to code. The more that price increases happen, whether on the domain level or hosting, the more power gets taken away from the layman and into the hands of the few powerful corporations. This deal will affect millions of people worldwide, and I strongly urge both parties to drop these plans purely for the sake of greed and profit. Request ICANN to avoid allowing rent-seeking verisign to price gouge us by allowing them to raise prices higher than inflation. This is harmful to budding internet entrepreneurs like me and against the spirit of the internet.
