I am a .org registrant (non-profit). ICANN staff should not unilaterally impose URS in legacy TLDs when that issue is precisely what is being examined by the volunteer ICANN Working Group who has been mandated to review this issue. ICANN policy making is supposed to be a ‘bottom up, multi-stakeholder model’. I believe that legacy gTLDs are fundamentally different from for-profit new gTLDs. Legacy TLDs are essentially a public trust, unlike new gTLDs which were created, bought and paid for by private interests. Registrants of legacy TLDs are entitled to price stability and predictability, and should not be subject to price increases with no maximums. Unlike new gTLDs, registrants of legacy TLDs registered their names and made their online presence on legacy TLDs on the basis that price caps would continue to exist. Unrestrained price increases on the millions of .org registrants who are not-for-profits or non-profits would be unfair to them. Unchecked price increases have the potential to result in hundreds of millions of dollars being transferred from these organizations to one non-profit, the Internet Society, with .org registrants receiving no benefit in return. ICANN should not allow one non-profit nearly unlimited access to the funds of other non-profits. ICANN appears to be entirely catering to registries by removing price caps. ICANN should stand up for the public interest and registrants!

Hi ICANN, I am one of the domain owners and came to know that you are going to increase the price of .ORG domains. Please do not do that. I am very much *against* raising the cost to register the .org domain for any legitimate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. I understand that you have relaxed the standards for domains, but any organization that is a legitimate nonprofit organization should not have to pay more to register its domain. Many of these 501(c)(3) charities are struggling to survive, and should not be burdened with extra expense just to feather some middle-man's nest. ICANN, I'm rather shocked to hear that you would consider extending the contract with PIR for .org domains and allow them to increase the price at will. Think about the abusive pricing in the unregulated pharmaceutical industry. Life-saving insulin prices have increase dramatically even though we've known how to make insulin for 100 years and it's not a difficult or expensive process. Why did they increase the price so dramatically? Because they could get away with it. Unrestrained capitalism is not a good thing. Please don't change the pricing restrictions for .org domains! I'm writing to express my disagreement with the new proposal for a new ".org Registry Agreement". In particular regarding the proposal for allowing unlimited fees increase. The .org domain has always been the only domain recognized for serving the nonprofit community. In fact, I think prices should be reduced (or even make it completely free) for all nonprofits, not treat it like any commercial domain (such as .com). The .org tld has always been intended for non-profit entities since its inception in the 80s, even though this was never enforced. Every other tld, including all the new general tlds, are used for commercial purposes already. Let's just keep at least one tld out of for-profits-only interests. Please reject this new proposal. Thanks.

The legacy top-level domains are not in the same category as the new top-level domains suggested and operated by private parties. The new top-level domains were sold for a high price, and charge similarly high prices to their customers. In contrast, the legacy domains were originally free, which greatly helped the growth of the Internet. Even when pricing plans were introduced to help defray the cost of supporting DNS and other domain-related services, the prices were kept low. The result is that millions of domains have been created by people who have made great contributions to the Internet. The .org domain, in particular, is populated by public-spirited non-profits, educational organizations, political activists, charities, and even families (among others). Allowing the prices for these domains to be raised arbitrarily will be greatly harmful not only to the Internet itself, but also to the wider public, who will no longer be able to locate such organizations--or even family members--because they have been priced out of their domains. I personally own a family-specific .org domain, and could not afford to keep it if price limits are removed. There is no reason to remove price limitations.
