Hi, As owner of pgfuse.org, openbsd-firewall.org and co-worker in the archlinux32.org project I object against removing the price cap on organisational domains. Putting free labour into those projects and paying for hosting fees is already enough. When domain names start to get more expensive, this kind of community work will be significantly harder. Hi, I use a .org domain for my personal blog because the prices for renewal are low and predictable. I fear removing the price cap could lead to dramatic price increases, as I’ve seen on other TLDs, and force me to migrate my site elsewhere. By creating an approved monopoly through this agreement and allowing PIR to set whatever price they wish for registration would be irresponsible. ICANN must look at other groups to run this registry or require that PIR submit rate hikes larger than 10% to committee for approval with appropriate cost justifications which can be reviewed and approved or denied based on merit. Otherwise I would expect mass movement by organization to a cost controlled domain and a large departure from registrations in the affected domains.

Removal of the price cap on the .org domain (Section 2.10 of the .org renewal agreement) is a terrible idea. The .org domains were always targeted on non-profit organizations, or open source projects. Removing the price cap would potentially create a senseless price increase on those domains - there is no good reason for it. Thank you for the opportunity to submit a comment. I am a .org registrant. ICANN does not seem to recognize the difference between a legacy extension created with the support of the US government, that predates the existence of ICANN and that has millions of existing users and the brand new extensions that started off with a new set of rules, in particular no price controls, and no existing registrants. They have completely different characteristics, history, and ownership structure. It is not acceptable for ICANN to ignore these differences and to propose that they be treated the same. Removing price caps is not fair to .org domain owners. Many of them have websites that they have used for years. If price caps are removed, the cost to renew their domain names may become too expensive, and they could be forced to give up websites that are important to them. The Uniform Rapid Suspension policy is too new and untested to apply on domain names that may be 20 years old or more. With the URS, the domain names could be taken down in a matter of days with little notice. ICANN should be doing more to protect owners of .org domain names. Why is ICANN trying to remove price protections for .org domain owners, so many of which are non-profits, so that they can be overcharged for their domain names? “ICANN is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable.” A move like such would not keep the internet stable, and would harm the pubic in the short and long run. I believe it is critically important to retain annual price increase caps in the new agreement. This limited supply model resembles a utility without competition and this should the regulated in the same way, as it is under the current agreement. Thank you for considering my comments. Troy A.
