I am a .org registrant and a not-for-profit or non-profit organization. I've read about a lot of bad decisions under the UDRP. The URS seems even worse. I heard the URS is very new and is being reviewed now to see if it is working properly. It is too soon to include an untested policy on .org domains where for a few hundred dollars anyone could try to shut down someone else's website. Telling the .org registry that it can charge any price it wants for renewing a domain name is a terrible idea. Why would you allow them to set a crazy high price? They could try to force the domain owners to pay a very high price each year to renew their domain name, and if the domain owner either won't or can't, then the .org registry could take away their domain name, set a high registration price on it, and then try to find someone else who is willing to pay a high price for it. This is very unfair to long time .org domain owners who may see their prices raised sky high for no reason. You let the new domain extensions charge any price they want, but that hasn't gone so well. Lots of people got burned when the new registries offered low rates for the first year, and then after people registered the domain names and some built web sites on them, some of the prices were raised through the roof. .Org has been working just fine for decades where the prices maybe go up a little bit each year. Allowing huge price increases from one year to the next could ruin .org for everybody. I think you should pay a little more attention to what is good for the owners of .org domain names. The registries are doing fine. They don't need your help as they are already making plenty of money. Sent from my iPhone

It’s important to think ahead and consider all the ramifications of this choice. It’s not an exaggeration to say that if you remove price caps on .org domains, you will ruin people’s lives, you will ruin businesses, you will ruin non-profit organizations, and you will damage this country. Case in point: I volunteer my time at a local volunteer fire station which serves 4 counties, 2 of which are highly dependent on our help to get the public the emergency care they need. Our website is a .org website. We have limited funding and the budget is always tight. If price caps were removed, we could potentially lose our website due to an inability to afford it, and this would hurt our ability to receive donations, provide information, and keep our staff organized and connected online. This is just one example of a way price cap removal would hurt people. In my opinion, this proposed price cap removal is shortsighted, irresponsible, greedy, and unpatriotic. The very suggestion fills me with disgust and disappointment, and I can see you having a huge public uprising on your hands if you move forward with this proposal. I am joining the majority of .org domain users to request that ICANN reconsiders removing registration price caps on .org domains. .org is one of the most widely used and recognized TLD's. If price caps are removed, registration and renewal of these domains may become uneconomical, forcing many important organizations to change their addresses and threatening the prominence and philosophy of .org. Unlike newer gTLD’s, .org is already very established. Allowing PIR, the registry operator, to act monopolistically with such a prominent TLD goes against what the Web should be. Hello, I am writing as the owner of a few .org domains. The .org TLD is an important part of the contemporary internet infrastructure, and as a small business owner I rely on both the consistency of pricing for domain names as well as the widespread recognition of the TLD. While PIR could undoubtedly make more money by increasing the price beyond 10% per year, these domains are of historical value and PIR's role as a steward of them should not allow for usury. Reasonable, predictable price increases are both fair and allow for appropriate planning from owner's such as myself. The creation of new TLDs is the place for experimental pricing and outrageous feels - not the established TLDs, particularly .org. Thank you, Douglas Whitaker

I am a longtime .org domain name registrant. I believe that ICANN staff should not unilaterally impose URS in legacy TLDs when that issue is precisely what is being examined by the volunteer ICANN Working Group who has been mandated to review this issue. ICANN policy making is supposed to be a 'bottom up, multi-stakeholder model', and not forced from the top down as this proposal seeks to do. I believe that legacy TLDs are fundamentally different from for-profit new gTLDs. Legacy TLDs are essentially a public trust, unlike new gTLDs which were created, bought and paid for by private interests. Registrants of legacy TLDs are entitled to price stability and predictability, and should not be subject to price increases with no maximums. Unlike new gTLDs, registrants of legacy TLDs registered their names and made their online presence on legacy TLDs on the basis that price caps would continue to exist. Domain switching costs are often prohibitively expensive. These legacy TLDs should be operated at the lowest possible pricing. The registry operators for legacy TLDs did not invent the TLDs nor do they "own" them. The registry management contracts should be put out to bid to reduce the price to registrants; they should not be granted indefinitely into the future to one group with unlimited price increases possible. This recent proposal by ICANN staff is the exact opposite of what should be happening. Prices should be going down, not upwards without restraint. Unrestrained price increases on the millions of .org registrants who are not-for-profits or non-profits would be unfair to them. Unchecked price increases have the potential to result in hundreds of millions of dollars being transferred from these organizations to one group, the Internet Society, with .org registrants receiving zero benefit in return. ICANN should not permit one group nearly unlimited access to the funds of other non-profits. ICANN appears to be entirely catering to registries by removing price caps. ICANN should stand up for the public interest and registrants, and make moves to reduce the pricing of legacy TLDs by opening up the registry management agreements to competitive bidding. I've just heard about the proposed changes to .org domain registration legislation, and if implemented, it needs to be pointed out in the strongest possible terms how this will affect the millions and millions of tiny business startups that are helping this world to become a better place. If there's no cap on price increases, then there's nothing to stop people who care more about money than human invention profiting from the poor and eventually robbing themselves too. This change needs to stop.
