I have heard that renewal prices for .ORG domains is going to be uncapped - which is a very frightening prospect. By nature .ORG domains are used for non-profit related organisations rather than a commercial business - which would mean that a non-profit organisation could be penalised for the renewal of their domain name by a dramatic increase in fees. This could be untenable for a non-profit to afford or deal with and essentially unethical when historically there has been a manageable and budgetable cost related to renewing a .ORG domain. When such organisation are focused on bringing benefits to society at large (in general) these types of organisation that use these types of domains needs supporting more than not. So it is more than confusing for there to be an idea to uncap the renewals of such domains. The idea does not (on the surface) appear to consider the implications to such organisations. Many of these organisations survive on charitable donations, and use their websites as a means to encourage support. Making them pay an increase in domain renewal fees at a non-capped rate could cut off their life line. I understand that not every organisation that uses .ORG are a non-profit, but a proportion of them are. And other organisations that use a .ORG, generally are not retail or commercial organisations anyway. I strongly recommend that a cap be kept for .ORG domains for the sake of decency and respect to ORGANISATIONS worldwide. I am strongly opposed to the proposed removal of price capping. Removing price capping will be terrible for the Internet as it is likely to result in many valuable resources being forced off-line by unregulated price increases. I would urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to not remove price capping. Steve Daulton

In behalf of my company, I would like to share my concern about possibility for registries to set prices for the old TLD's. For the new TLD's people are aware that the registry can put any price they want, and if they chose to register the site anyways, they are aware of the consequences. I don't think it's fair for the domain owners (I have +2000 old TLD's sites) with old TLD's since they actually "sealed the deal" with the knowledge that the price cannot increate more than 10% at a time. I really would like to ask for NOT allowing this to come to reality. This is to register a strong objection to the removal of price caps on .org domains. .org domains have come to be the domain of choice for non-profits and community groups around the world. Removing the price cap will adversely affect the organisations who can least afford it, who benefit most people without private gain. I understand the general commercial pressures in the domain market, but I believe it would be against the public interest to remove the price caps on the .org domains specifically. Also, most non-profits will not be aware of these changes, so the likely sudden price hikes will take them by surprise, and unlike private businesses and individuals, most grant funded organisations have very little discretionary funds, most of them being pre-allocated to specific things. This means that they might not be able to adapt to the changes in time and could lose the domains they have come to rely on, often for life saving and crisis support. The gap in digital skills could also create extra problems if they needed to change under pressure from domain vendors who suddenly hike their prices to go after more profitable clients. This would be a loss to the public interest.

I'm writing to ask that you retain the cap on price increases for registering and renewing .org domains. Removing the limit on cost increases would seriously undercut many non-profits that are under-financed and struggling. The current pricing structure and limits to annual renewal should remain the standard. Thank you.

To whom it may concern: I am a domain name registrant. I've read about a lot of bad decisions under the UDRP. The URS seems even worse. I heard the URS is very new and is being reviewed now to see if it is working properly. It is too soon to include an untested policy on .org domains where for a few hundred dollars anyone could try to shut down someone else's website. Telling the .org registry that it can charge any price it wants for renewing a domain name is a terrible idea. Why would you allow them to set a crazy high price? They could try to force the domain owners to pay a very high price each year to renew their domain name, and if the domain owner either won't or can't, then the .org registry could take away their domain name, set a high registration price on it, and then try to find someone else who is willing to pay a high price for it. This is very unfair to long time .org domain owners who may see their prices raised sky high for no reason. You let the new domain extensions charge any price they want, but that hasn't gone so well. Lots of people got burned when the new registries offered low rates for the first year, and then after people registered the domain names and some built web sites on them, some of the prices were raised through the roof. .Org has been working just fine for decades where the prices maybe go up a little bit each year. Allowing huge price increases from one year to the next could ruin .org for everybody. I think you should pay a little more attention to what is good for the owners of .org domain names. The internet was built to democratize knowledge and communication. There must be an accessible floor price to let anyone across the world to buy domains. And we all know that .com domains are the first ones taken, and many of the good ones are long gone. But .org clones still exist, and .info, and .biz, and they must be allowed for purchase at an affordable level. More than half the world can't afford a .org domain *now* with a day's wage. I am writing in concern for the Request for Comment on the .org TLD renewal. As someone who runs and administers multiple websites for non-profit organizations who utilize .org domains, it concerns me that a vendor would allow prices to go uncapped. Many organizations that utilize .org domains are non-profit and have very low operating budgets, and many can only afford a .org domain. It actively discourages non-profit organizations from having a domain presence on the public internet. While for-profit businesses can afford higher costs, non-profit organizations cannot. It is the same as raising rent to someone who is living on a fixed-income. Changes to their budget cannot easily be absorbed, and it may cause frustration with the organizations. Thanks for requesting comments on this topic. While other organizations for other TLD's may be able to absorb a price increase, non-profits, especially smaller ones, cannot.
