DNS Abuse (Framework proposed by 11 Registries and Registrars)
Dear colleagues, please read the Framework proposed by a number of Registrars and Registries. A very interesting starting point relating to the discussion about DNS Abuse. Kindest regards, Olivier -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [ICANN Community Leaders] DNS Abuse Date: Thu, 17 Oct 2019 19:42:54 -0400 From: Graeme Bunton <gbunton@tucows.com> To: so-ac-sg-cleaders@icann.org Hello all, While this was not an initiative of either the RrSG or the RySG, it seemed pertinent to share here, especially given the previous webinar and importance of the topic in Montreal. 11 leading Registries and Registrars have come together and used their collective expertise to establish a shared understanding and definition of DNS abuse Using those definitions, the document then proposes a framework for action on DNS Abuse. Please see the attached PDF or this link http://www.circleid.com/posts/20191017_domain_registries_and_registrars_rele... We look forward to discussing this further with all of you in Montreal and beyond. Graeme

I am wondering why *typosquatting* was not included in their DNS Abuse definitions list. Can anyone expand on this? -ed

Michele: I am asking because to me is not clear. Can you explain why Typosquating was not included in the framework? Thanks. -ed On Tue, Oct 22, 2019 at 8:37 AM Michele Neylon - Blacknight < michele@blacknight.com> wrote:

Sorry, but I’d have to reply with the same question as before. The framework is very clearly aimed at dealing with a narrow set of DNS abuse which are not ambiguous. If you wanted to start expanding that to include more subjective issues then many of us would never have signed on. -- Mr Michele Neylon Blacknight Solutions Hosting, Colocation & Domains https://www.blacknight.com/ https://blacknight.blog/ Intl. +353 (0) 59 9183072 Direct Dial: +353 (0)59 9183090 Personal blog: https://michele.blog/ Some thoughts: https://ceo.hosting/ ------------------------------- Blacknight Internet Solutions Ltd, Unit 12A,Barrowside Business Park,Sleaty Road,Graiguecullen,Carlow,R93 X265,Ireland Company No.: 370845 From: Eduardo Diaz <eduardodiazrivera@gmail.com> Date: Tuesday 22 October 2019 at 13:49 To: Michele Neylon <michele@blacknight.com> Cc: "cpwg@icann.org" <cpwg@icann.org> Subject: Re: [GTLD-WG] [CPWG] DNS Abuse (Framework proposed by 11 Registries and Registrars) Michele: I am asking because to me is not clear. Michele: I am just an end-user asking to clarify concepts that I presume are considered DNS abuse. Thanks to John McCormac for explaining. -ed On Tue, Oct 22, 2019 at 11:11 AM Michele Neylon - Blacknight < michele@blacknight.com> wrote:

Typosquatting is not exactly a major problem compared to other forms of content targeted abuse. With typosquatting, there are some established legal approaches for dealing with the problem such as UDRP. A lot of the content targeted abuse depends on lifting content from other websites, search engine results and blogs and it is difficult to track. The aim is to create "evergreen" websites for PPC purposes with content that appears to be continually updated. The evergreen content is inteded to fool search engine algorithms. This is more webspam than e-mail spam and the framework seems to be focused on e-mail spam. Heavily discounted registrations tend to facilitate this form of webspam. Left unchecked, it can fill a TLD with templated content and drives out developed websites because the TLD gets a bad reputation.
