All First off apologies for not getting this to you sooner - I've been travelling and my travel was interrupted by the snow storm, which has led to me being in Boston instead of Carlow! Attached are two documents that try to capture what has been previously discussed, but based on recent calls there are a couple of option questions. With the DNS research doc - are there any aspects of this that have been overlooked or that you fundamentally disagree with? For the "technical issue resolution" document - there are several key questions that need answers and / or discussion. To answer the following questions more explicitly and conceptually: Who associated with the domain name registration needs to be identified and/or contacted for each purpose? What is the objective achieved by identifying and/or contacting each of those entities? What might be expected of that entity with regard to the domain name? Hello All, Since Michele is out sick I am trying to help move things forward. We will be discussing all the drafting team's work tomorrow on the working group call. We need someone from the DT to provide the final document and present the definition and high level overview of your work. Please let me know who will present for DT1 The leadership has been encouraging the DT's to standardized the format of the definition and to focus on the "information collected". I have suggested changes to the definition below but up to the DT to revise the definition. *Technical Resolution* "Information collected to enable contact of the relevant contacts to facilitate tracing, identification and resolution of incidents, which relate, either entirely or in part, to technical issues relating to the DNS. Use of such data should ordinarily be limited to those who are affected by such issues, or by those persons who are tasked (directly or indirectly) with the resolution of such matters on their behalf." *Academic Research * "Information collected to enable use of aggregate WHOIS data elements by researchers and other similar persons, as a source for academic or other public interest studies or research, relating either solely or in part, to the use of the DNS." It's difficult to understand and explain what is going on with DNS resolution, WHOIS and who is involved with whom based on what contract. We are in the process of launching a new website. We didn't know who the web hosting company was nor the identity of the registrant (there were so many volunteers who were handling website issues, that nobody knows who did what). Our new tech person looked up the information and found out the name of the web hosting company. But we don't know who the registrant is. This query was then sent to the web hosting company. Our tech person wanted to have both websites (the new one and the old) to show us the difference. Does that make sense? Second question: Is this relevant to our work? :)

It opens up a giant can of worms, namely the as yet un-defined natrue of the public interest at ICANN. Stephanie Perrin: (11:45) And if a legitimate company (eg Symantec) does research on the DNS in order to gain market dominance in a particular security matter, is that market research, product (eg algorithm) , or "public interest" research. I think this is a very dicey area, diffcult to define. All Welcome. You have been selected by the RDS leadership team to serve on a drafting team to define the RDS purposes named in the subject line above. Thank you very much for volunteering to participate in this effort.
