I think we need a use case on domain tasting. I am certainly not the person to write it, as I barely understand how it works, but I do think we need one, given the extent of the practice (in my limited understanding). Stephanie Perrin
Hi Stephanie, A GNSO consensus policy was implemented a couple of years back which according to data collected nearly eliminated the issue of domain tasting (see https://www.icann.org/news/announcement-2009-08-12-en). Not sure whether that changes your view on whether a use case is still needed, but I thought I would share regardless. Thanks Marika! If it really did eliminate it, then I can relax. I am just wondering..... SP On 2016-08-15 17:23, Marika Konings wrote:

Thanks for pointing to this Marika. Then ALAC Liaison to the GNSO - and current ALAC Chair - Alan Greenberg marshalled the ALAC's position and chaired that WG. I'm sure Alan would be willing to offer any additional insights as Stephanie might wish. -Carlton ============================== Carlton A Samuels Mobile: 876-818-1799 *Strategy, Planning, Governance, Assessment & Turnaround* ============================= On Mon, Aug 15, 2016 at 4:23 PM, Marika Konings <marika.konings@icann.org> wrote:

I think we need a use case on domain tasting.
It was "outlawed" by policy a few years ago, and (more effectively IMHO) made ineffective financially by limitations from Registries on refunds against domain registrations. The practice of "trawling" whois lookups and availability checks and the registering them for resale by some Registrars (and Registries) still takes place, but even that is far less prevalent now than 5 years ago Rob --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus
I wonder though if we have residual policy crumbs in the RAA that might be leftover from this abuse that need to be removed? have no idea, just speculation. Stephanie On 2016-08-16 13:17, Rob Golding wrote:

One could argue that it has been ressurrected by registries that hand out their SLDs for free or nominal fees. Only this time around, the domains are registered for the entire year. Best, Volker Am 16.08.2016 um 19:33 schrieb Stephanie Perrin:

That's not "gaming the system" though - just 1 particular "business model" that opinions are divided on. The previous previous method was exploiting a "feature" of the billing policies/systems for financial gain to the detriment of Registrants. The new method are "just registrations" (although it is also confirming that the TLDs are worthless) Rob -- Rob Golding rob.golding@astutium.com Astutium Ltd, Number One Poultry, London.
