Dear colleagues, I think we also need further expertise for languages of the Americas. Another online resource would be http://scriptsource.org/ Best, Meikal 2015-10-19 18:44 GMT+02:00 Dillon, Chris <c.dillon@ucl.ac.uk>:

Meikal, I tried Chinuk and got nothing. When I tried Chinook there were some hits, the first being to the Duployan Script (the subject of shorthands, missionaries, and syllabaries is worth a beer on its own), which wouldn't be of the slightest use. When I clicked on the "sources" field I see lots of Omniglot and Ethnolog and ISO 639 and Glottolog and OLAC and UNESCO links. Nothing useful. But none to the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, which is the recognized authority for modern Chinuk, and oddly enough, how I learned Chinuk. I also tried Abenaki and got another set of useless links to ISO639:3 code points. Nothing pointing to either the Odenak or Becancour Reserves, PQ, Canada, where Western Abenaki is taught, nor to Old Town or Indian Island or Pleasant Point, Maine, USA, where Eastern Abenaki is taught. Next I tried Siksika, since I happen to have the Siksikai'powahsin series for Siksika language learners (and know the consultant to the project ), again, just a bunch of ISO 639 and similarly useless "sources". Nothing from Treaty 7, nor from the Montana located Tribe (Old Sun School, etc.). While I wouldn't mind assistance, I'd prefer the assistance of someone working in the field of teaching a native language, or with ... what do we say ... a relationship with the community. Dear Eric and colleagues, Maybe my email was a bit too brief. The web resource I pointed out wasn't intended in particular for languages of the Americas, but as a global resource. It is still growing but I think it will outgrow Omniglot very quickly. As for what concerns getting further expertise for languages of the Americas – that includes Amerindian languages of the North, Central, and the South of America. I also would prefer members of the language communities but linguists who have worked with the language communities should be easier to identify and have a more global knowledge of languages and script use. Best wishes, Meikal 2015-10-20 9:41 GMT+02:00 Dillon, Chris <c.dillon@ucl.ac.uk>:

Meikal, Colleagues, On the question of linguists vs users: First, if there are no users, only linguists, then no identifiers are being written, so no need for this particular activity. Second, users may not know the representational systems of linguists, or they may chose to ignore them. In general, a language community's current practice should inform us, e.g., for Lakota texts, White Hat orthography over Riggs, or Boas, etc. Here is a mostly missed opportunity -- a regional native tech meeting going on yesterday, today and tomorrow, "To App or Not App: Looking at How Technology Impacts Language Learning", in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The URL is: http://www.ilinative.org/iliss/index.html I'm corresponding with Chris Harvey, who's likely to be there (he works for ILI), and who has done a number of keymaps. I'm also working with the director of the NorthWest Indian Languages Institute. The URL is: pages.uoregon.edu/nwili Cheers, Eric On 10/20/15 1:04 PM, Meikal Mumin wrote:
