Apparently most application bundle the MDA & MTA – but not all.
MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) may be something like sendmail, postfix,..., running SMTP in both client and server functions. MDA (Mail Delivery Agent) is usually the server side for POP or IMAP. Different protocols are involved, and so it should come at no surprise that it's often different software. Regards, Martin.
