In a recent meeting with some Mozilla folks.... Thunderbird is not dead. Instead, it's ties to Firefox's code have been severed so that the advancement of neither is constrained by the other. Keep in mind that Thunderbird is officiallly abandonware. Mozilla said they'd stop developing it, but I keep seeing new versions which as far as I can tell are just passing through updates to the code shared with other projects.
