Some thoughts and questions around EAI: 1) We have a signed contract with John Levine to prepare the detailed Introduction to EAI. Expected delivery date before the end of March. 2) We have a signed contract with Matt Pruis to develop a set of lecture slides on EAI. 3) We are still seeking someone to perform the EAI evaluation of email software and services 4) We are currently planning on EAI gathering in Guangzhou China on Friday, the 12th of January 2017. We’re still working on the logistics and program. Please let me know if you’re interested in attending. Some travel funding is available. 5) We think it will be good to bring IDN TLD operators (ccTLDs & gTLDs) together to forge business partnerships. We’ve seen reports from Taiwan and Thailand that registrants who have an EAI service available are more likely to use and renew their domain names. Toward this end, we will use the meeting in Guangzhou to foster these partnerships. We have also talked to APTLD (the ccTLD association in Asia Pacific) about participating in one of their meetings and they suggest their 2nd meeting in 2018. 6) EAI Promotion at ICANN61 During ICANN60, Ajay Data from XgenPlus distributed EAI mail addresses to anyone interested. The idea didn’t have enough time for us to do something more structured, but we do have time if we want to, collectively, do something for ICANN61 in Puerto Rico in March. The UASG cannot be seen to support any single company, if there’s interest from several EAI providers we could consider doing something in Puerto Rico. Please let me know if you might be interested. 7) At the UASG Workshop we made some progress towards ‘Good Practice’ around EAI with the idea that the MTA, when it encounters a non SMTPUTF8 MTA, will have the originating MUA ‘downgrade’ the message with an ASCII Alias that has an EAI address in the display address. This won’t work in all situations, particularly where the non SMTPUTF8 MTA is a transit point, but it could help advance EAI through the transition to full SMTPUTF8 compliance in the email eco system. 8) I would like to schedule an EAI call (probably several because of the time zones) during early December. Please let me know if there’s dates that are particularly bad for you. Please let us all know what’s happening in your world around EAI. I feel like one of the big issues is lack of support from big-name MTAs and email providers. Until that happens, this is all a very uphill battle… For example, when will Gmail allow me to have a Cyrillic address? When will Oracle Communications Messaging Server add SMTP8 support?

Hello Paul, I strongly agree with your points. " Big-name MTAs and email providers" are essential to UA and EAI work. +1 It was echoed by me too during ICANN60 workshop and part of actionables in Minutes. Thanks. On 30 November 2017 07:50:03 GMT+05:30, Jiankang Yao <yaojk@cnnic.cn> wrote:

When I see them at the M3AAWG meeting in March I can certainly ask them what their EAI plans are. But I can magically predict they'll say that in the markets they serve they don't see a business case yet. Regards, John Levine, john.levine@standcore.com Standcore LLC
Yes, these are some cases I happen to encounter too. The message I think that we might tell them is : Since some email service providers have supported EAI, some Big-name MTAs and email providers should be also persuaded to upgrade at least receive and send EAI address while their own system can still keep ASCII email address. Otherwise, the customers of these Big-name MTAs and email providers can not receive EAI message, which blocks the communication with some part of the email world, which may have some negative effect on their business. Gmail already does that. R's, John

With respect to ‘big name’ MTAs, my understanding is that both PostFix and Exim MTAs are EAI ready. Once we find someone to perform the EAI evaluation we’ll have a clearer idea of just how ready they (and others) are. Don
