Data point: Shift in USG position regarding the SDGs

Hi all, I'd like to bring your attention to the remarks delivered on 4 March by the US Minister Counselor to ECOSOC regarding the USG position about the Agenda 2030. This is a significant shift that can have serious implications in the WSIS+20 review, particularly in a context where many of us have advocated for the Internet as a force for good that helps advance global development. The remarks are located here: https://usun.usmission.gov/remarks-at-the-un-meeting-entitled-58th-plenary-… A couple of concerning extracts: "We have a concern that this resolution is a reaffirmation of Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although framed in neutral language, Agenda 2030 and the SDGs advance a program of soft global governance that is inconsistent with U.S. sovereignty and adverse to the rights and interests of Americans." "Put simply, globalist endeavors like Agenda 2030 and the SDGs lost at the ballot box. Therefore, the United States rejects and denounces the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, and it will no longer reaffirm them as a matter of course." Best, Carlos Reyes Dear all, The European Commission and the 2025 Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU are organizing a “Global Multistakeholder High Level Conference on Governance of Web 4.0 and Virtual Worlds<https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/event-web-4-governance>” on March 31-April 1, 2025, in Brussels and online. This conference “aims at triggering a global discussion on the principles for the global governance of Web 4.0 and virtual worlds feeding into the World Summit on the Information Society 20 years review (WSIS+20)”. ICANN President and CEO, Kurtis Lindqvist, will be participating in the event and speaking in the High-Level Panel. The Commission has announced that during each parallel session, individuals and organizations can deliver 2-minute statements on covered topics to highlight key areas of agreement or disagreement. FOC Advisory Network Proactive Advice on WSIS+20

Hi all, I’m bringing your attention to this proactive advice<https://freedomonlinecoalition.com/foc-advisory-network-proactive-advice-ws…> regarding the WSIS+20 review issued by the Advisory Network of the Freedom Online Coalition. It aligns with many of the ideas shared on this mailing list about renewing the IGF mandate and aligning the GDC implementation as part of the WSIS ecosystem. The advice also advocates for the multistakeholder model, although it didn’t explicitly mention the NM+10 outcomes as a reference. There’s another item that we shouldn’t ignore. This advice also calls for reinforcing digital inclusion as a WSIS priority, given that “digital inequality persists.” Keeping this argument in mind will be essential to making WSIS+20 a process focused on bolstering the WSIS Action Lines to advance digital progress (and align the GDC under this ecosystem) rather than a referendum on the consensus about the multistakeholder approach for Internet Governance.
