I am a domainer (I invest in domain names as a business). I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. There is no good reason for exorbitant price increases on internet domain names! This is just gouging the public.

Domain names are a limited good created on top of a huge heap of public IP and network effects. ICANN has an effective monopoly over this good, and their fees are essentially rents (in the classic sense). Clearly, there is a lot of temptation to raise fees, and I'm sure there's a ton of rationalizations, but they're all bullshit. The cost of administering the system is close to $0 at the margin. ICANN is a steward. The Verisign $20m they agreed to pay ICANN how will that money be spent and the effect of price increase for .com will have on the internet community? It appears to me you people are acting like Democrats without accountability. I'm not saying not to have price Increase but why punish the internet community with price increases that are out of control.
