There once was a goose who laid golden eggs. Each day the goose faithfully laid a golden egg, and each day the caretaker would take that egg to market in exchange for a sum of cash. Over time, the caretaker began to amass a small fortune. As the caretaker grew ever wealthier, his wants grew more extravagant, until at last one egg from the golden goose was no longer enough. The caretaker demanded the goose lay ever more eggs. Now two eggs a day! Now three eggs a day! Now four eggs a day! Each day the caretaker's cart grew heavier with golden eggs, until one day others in the marketplace began to take notice. Suspicions aroused, they demanded to know the source of the caretaker's many golden eggs. A loud cry went up from the marketplace that was heard by all in the land. Soon kings, constables, and other dignitaries gathered. Descending on the caretaker's farm they seized upon the goose who laid the golden eggs, and in the ensuing clamor the goose was trampled to death. The end.

To whom it may concern, I’m writing today to comment on the proposed Amendment 3 which would allow Verisign to increase prices of .com domains by 7% per year with little regulation. I am a content creator with a YouTube channel dedicated to online branding and marketing, and as someone who helps many people launch their online presence and build their first website, allowing this type of price increase would be irresponsible and reckless. I understand that your organization wants to “exit” the domain price regulation space, but this is not the proper way to do it. Accepting a $20 Million dollar donation from Verisign as a favor for doing this means you would be caving for money, a corrupt practice that I don’t want to see ICANN do. Allowing this price increase with no ceiling means that 20 years from now, the barrier to get a .com domain will become greater and greater until it is no longer a reasonable option for those wanting to launch a business on a budget. I am urging you to treat this situation carefully, declining to proceed with Amendment 3 and instead considering more neutral ways to exit being the domain pricing regulation middle man. To do this properly, you need to step away from regulating prices for ALL domain registries, not just .com - and you need to “hand the torch” to a government or other agency who will handle that side of things. To remove the price ceiling on the most popular TLD in the world means that Verisign can and will engage in monopolistic practices, hurting small business owners and those wanting to build a personal brand. On behalf of Craylor Media and those who support and watch my content, I’m asking you to stop Amendment 3. I also ask that you consider all comments equally and carefully. This is not a decision to be taken lightly, and I want to see ICANN do the best thing for everyone. Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. This occurs to me as unreasonable.

I am a .com registrant, as are many of my customers. I am just learning of the proposed .com changes, including annual 7% price increases that are well above inflation. With .com having around 150M annual registrations, it's difficult to understand why price increases are needed. My clients are opposed to these increases. It doesn't sound like much at the wholesale cost, but after registrar and reseller markups it will be significant. I suspect many customers will drop domains from their portfolio they can no longer justify keeping to offset the cost increases. Please reconsider. I am not in favor of the proposed Amendment 3 changes because of the ripple effect it would have on increasing prices for .com domains. The amendment should be revised to be explicit about what the additional money is spent on so that it can be held accountable and justified.
