To whom it may concern, As the owner of a small business I oppose the new changes to the contract with Verisign, Inc who operate the .COM top-level-domain (TLD). Not only was it made in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users, but it is a greedy cash grab apparently with no oversight on how those funds are supposed to be spent. I wholeheartedly oppose this action as it will do irreparable damage to the democratic nature of the internet and make it less attainable for those people without the means and funds to participate in it. Hello, I am writing to express my strong opposition to the ICANN contract with Verisign affecting .com domains. 40% of all registered domain names online are .COM, including many diverse sites of artists, artisans, writers, public intellectuals, and more. According to this new agreement, Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and the increases don’t stop there. This will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. This is a betrayal of the ideals of the internet as a forum for sharing, free expression, and creativity. Price increases are hard to accept at this time in my usage of my namecheap.com use. I just started using this domain name website and I cannot afford your intended increase in prices without at least considering my opinion or my say into the matter, I am a customer and need representation for all things that effectively affect my income and expenses. I still need time to build my business and start showing a profit, but if you are going to increase my rent before I can make a descent living, then you will force me to take my business elsewhere, however I have already paid for one year of service and expect you to honor the price I paid in good faith. The details of the proposed amendment are absolutely shameful! The ones benefiting from .COM registrations should *NOT* be Verisign or ICANN. It should be the people who use those domains to start their business, build their brand, and do amazing things. The proposed amendment allows for a .COM price to be 71.8% higher than it is today. The .COM TLD is a staple of the Internet and should remain as financially accessible as possible. This proposed amendment is a disgrace! Please stop it from going through. -Kenneth Lim

I’m a solopreneur seeking to make a livelihood using the internet and the latest technology available at a modest cost. As a result, I’ve been able to compete for business despite my size and limited budget. I recently learned about the price increase through my domain name provider. This means that .com wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices during the next decade and beyond. In a nutshell, such an increase threatens my ability to stay in business. If I am forced to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars each year to retain my .com domains, I will cease to be profitable. Such a proposed increase in price will eliminate competition from the “little” guys. People migrated to the United States for the freedom and opportunity to make a living. To those entrusted with keeping the internet gateways, I have received very disturbing news that you are seeking to unilaterally increase wholesale domain name prices for ".com" domains by as much as 70% or more over the next 10 years. Further that you have attempted to do this "stealthily" without consulting the registrars that serve the internet. Apparently you have prior form in this regard; of unilaterrally announcing price increases suddenly and without consultation. But you should consider that the ".com" domain is a different matter than the others. The impact is far greater - and the anger will be much more widely spread and more keenly felt. I for one have not heard of your prior similar behaviour, but as the owner of several .com domains I am now up to speed, and I am pissed!

I've just been made aware of the new contracts being discussed regarding .com domain price increases. I do not agree with such an ego-centric approach to business. While I understand businesses need to make a profit, lavishly feeding off of people in such a manner is pure greed. The fact these contracts have been discussed behind closed doors shows guilt and greed doesn't become you. Quite discusting in fact, maybe moving forward with a little honour and ethics would be more appropriate. Let's see if you guys have a sense of decency. Thanks

These small fee changes cut directly into the already thin margin of my business and thousands of others like my company. I totally understand the rising cost of maintaining and operating the vital core infrastructure necessary to maintain the name service and registration of the internet but without considering us, the troops who hustle everyday to bring new Nettizens to the ecommerce world we suffer alienating large segment of the market. I am apposed to this amendment which would allow for the increase in price on '.com' domains. This change would make access to a website much less accessible for many people. If the internet and having a site is not accessible then that goes against the point of the internet in my opinion. It should be available for the open and accessible exchange of information.

For the record, I have no problem with prices going up over time, but the proposed changes seem excessive under the circumstances. Firstly, for a non-profit organization with the stated goals of promoting competition and broad community representation, the likelihood of these price increases having a substantial negative effect on those goals is very, very high. Secondly, the process was reputedly conducted in direct conflict with the ICANN mandate to conduct its mission through community consensus. If it's true that the negotiation of these price increases was exclusively between ICANN and Verisign, that is definitely inappropriate. I don't know the remedy for such malfeasance but am quite sure that there would be follow-up to correct such malfeasance if any. Given that you control a worldwide commodity good, it would be in good faith for you to put up large changes like this to a vote. The reason you don't is because it will probably fail to pass. To whom it may concern, I am writing to state my disapproval of the new Verisign contract. ICANN has a responsibility to ensure domain name registration is competitive, and signing a deal like this with Verisign does the opposite, further enabling the Verisign monopoly. Allowing Verisign to both set the wholesale rates and compete against wholesalers is a blatant conflict of interest. I believe the changes will hurt the web community as a whole. Greetings, While in support of a strong infrastruction and continued improvements, I cannot support the proposed and approved increases that I have recently been reading about. In short, most of the clients that I currently do work for will be cancelling services and finding other ways to support their needs. We will start looking immediately for alternatives to the .com domain in particular and if prices do indeed rise as much as projected, many of the other domains will cost equivalent or less, so we might as well put our funds into something that is more recognizable to our clients. While not a a large service, my dozen paying clients will look elsewhere. Perhaps more importantly, the dozen or so not for profits and community service organizations will have to give up much of what they are doing, since things are stretched as it is. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. Hi there, I am extremely unhappy to hear that ICANN wants to increase prices on .com domains. This is seriously unfair to users because we already pay too much for a .com domain. Also, you cannot just go and increase the renewal fee so drastically?! If I bought my .com for R100, I expect it to renew for around R100 and not R170. I also expect it to be sustainable. The fact that ICANN can just make drastic decisions like these that will have a great impact on businesses is shocking. Please b do not raise your prices as we are already paying so much as it is. Hello I oppose the new verisign proposed contract. It is unfair to consumers. Domain names are one of the few telecoms and IT products and services that have got more expensive over time. Based on past contracts, it is clear the price will go up by the maximum at every opportunity. This is a legalised monopoly and extortion. Contracts should not be negotiated in secret to line icann’s pockets at the expense of millions of consumers. 20m dollars is also really a pittance given the profit verisign can make. Hi, I wanted to voice a comment against the increase in price for .com registrations. .com and other TLD registration prices continue to rise despite the industry maturing into a stable situation where it ought to be able to sustain service at the same price. I would argue that it is monopolistic to raise prices in this way as long as Verisign is a for-profit company. The market and consumes would be better served by the TLD operator being a non-profit and letting natural competition occur at the Registrar level. As long as Verisign, and other TLD Operators, have no competition then any price increase should be viewed with skepticism. Dan Smith
