Small businesses and individuals need access to domains at reasonable prices to insure the diversity of the voices, businesses and products available on the internet (and thus in our larger society). Allowing companies to milk more and more out of consumers for basic internet needs (domains), is furthering the problem of who gets to be heard in our society. As a sole proprietor with a modest income, I find this to be outrageous. Along with the domain rate increase, I learned the new Verisign agreement includes other increases that will drive overall prices up further. Is your end goal to make .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody? This move sure appears that way. I am concerned for all of the small businesses that we support, be it through just domain registration or through full-service web development and hosting. It will not only affect the bottom line for these small businesses that already don’t have a lot to spend on web sites, but also raise prices across the board for companies such as Squarespace and Wix, who are there for the people who can’t do everything themselves. We have already been subjected to a 300% increase in hosting fees due to cPanel changes in the past year, which has had to be passed onto clients, but to add domain registration fee increases too may spell the end for a lot of SMB sites with no marketing budget. I urge you to re-assess the increases in costs and lower the percentage cap for each decade considerably in order to allow them to hopefully absorb the costs. After years of being gauged by other "registrars" we found Namecheps and thought we had found a good business partner. Hello, I would like to voice my opposition to Proposed Amendment 3. I believe that the global DNS registration system should be run primarily as a public concern. The only entities that stand to benefit from the proposed arrangement are verisign itself, at the expense of the public. These price hikes will impact the millions of small, independent businesses and developers that rely on the system as is to make their livelihood. Further, this could prove yet another point of pressure that convinces a small business to make their online presence exclusively in the Facebook walled garden and eschew the web itself. The web, and global DNS, were envisioned to be run for the public good, and they SHOULD be run for the public good. Amendment 3 is absurd. This will effectively limit access to .com domains for low income individuals and small businesses making a socioeconomic barrier to the most reputable TLD of all time. ICANN will be the recipient of a huge kickback from Verisign and amendment 3 does nothing to illustrate how these funds will be spent to benefit the global community. This will be seen as a shady deal performed in secret to the detriment of many and the benefit of very few. It's a shame that ICANN finds this publicity inconsequential and disregards what's best for the global community. If amendment 3 passes, I will do everything I can to educate all my customers about the reputation of .COM TLD's; that they have been twisted into a cash grab scheme and are no longer the go-to TLD for businesses.
