You can either read this e-mail for brevity or download the attached presentation (from which I withdrew the information). 1.Why this PDP Working ? WHOIS was created in the 80s to identify & contact those responsible for operation of Internet network resources. After nearly 15 years of GNSO task forces, working groups, workshops, surveys & studies, the ICANN community has been unable to reach consensus on comprehensive WHOIS policy reforms. In response to the 2012 WHOIS Policy Review Team’s Final Report, the ICANN Board launched the RDS PDP & the Expert Working Group (EWG) to inform it The EWG was tasked with taking a fresh approach by redefining the purpose of gTLD registration data & then proposing a new model for gTLD Registration Directory Services to address accuracy, privacy & access issues. 2.What is WHOIS <<WHOIS is an overloaded term, it could mean: üRegistration data üAccess protocol (WHOIS protocol) üDirectory Service üIt is best to use individual terms It was created in 1982, but as the Internet grew, WHOIS began to serve the needs of different stakeholders such as registrants, law enforcement, intellectual property & trademark owners, businesses & individual users - but the protocol remained largely unchanged. Through the Affirmation of Commitments (AOC), ICANN is committed to “enforcing its existing policy relating to WHOIS, subject to applicable laws. Next Generation RDS PDP WG 2nd Outreach Message

Dear NPOCers Greetings and I hope this finds you well. I am currently acting as the contact person between the Next Generation RDS PDP working group and the NPOC membership. RDS is standing for *Registration Directory Services *and basically what the whole group is about is what will replace the WHOIS we have today , meaning it is all about which registration information will be required, requested, stored and maybe data mined, from those registering a domain. As such this is a key part to ensure the freedom of expression and security on the Internet. As you see from the sentences before, the working group don't make it easy to understand what is going on and that is something we have to work hard in the future to change. The working group has requested to pass on to you its second outreach message. Basically, the working group is asking you all what RDS requirements should be added to the requirements that are already listed in the documents. Please read the documents. If you have any questions, please contact me, I will do my best to answer your questions as long as you understand that I am often struggling with this. Nobody can and has to be perfect, as long as we try our best.*If you have any requirements that should be added, please send them to me and I will send them to the working group. The working group is asking for responses before the 28th of June*. I know this is hard work, I know it is hard to understand, but I know that it is important and I also know is that we have to start somewhere. Take it as a learning opportunity. BTW, if you have real problems with all the acronyms just enter ICANN plus the acronym into a search engine and you more often then not get the explanation right away.
