Dear Sirs Over the years I have purchased domains to use for blogs and book landing pages etc as I intend to focus on writing rather than design in the near future. I have particularly tried to find .com domain names because we've always been told that .com is regarded as the most professional and valued domain. I am a freelance designer with an income limited by chronic autoimmune disease, so the cost of the domains is an important consideration. Independent workers and small business owners like myself are already struggling with the rising cost of software subscriptions, hosting, security and so on. We are at the mercy of online service and software providers. The prospect of increasing .com domain renewal pricing is worrying, to say the least. I concur with the points made eloquently by Namecheap: https://www.namecheap.com/blog/icann-allows-com-price-increases-gets-more-m… and would like to add my voice to dissuade you from making these changes. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. Dear ICANN: I am the owner of over 800 .COM domains and I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified for what Verisign manages in the registration process. I can not think of another business that would allow such increases without putting the product/service out to bid. Verisign is merely the manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price, and no justification in increasing the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. I can not see how an increase in price is in the public interest. Please revisit this issue and come to the proper conclusion to keep pricing as is. Thanks in advance. Regards, Michael Sallese

As a freelance web developer for nearly two decades, I strongly advise against the increase in price of registering domains. I do not think that this is in the best interest of the consumer, nor the best interest of the industry. It's already frustrating that we deal with squatters on otherwise un-used domains, I'd hate to start having to pay the registrars who are complicit, more of my money cutting into my profits freelancing, or to charge my customers more money. They'll either take their business elsewhere or charge their customers more. Please, strongly consider keeping the price fixed as it has been for the past number of years. Thank you, - Ben Martin

It's obvious to all that this cash grab is intended to replace lost revenue from 1) increased competition in the TLD space, and 2) increased competition (i.e. Let's Encrypt) in the SSL/TLS certificate space. While I sympathize with the challenges of being the disrupted industry incumbent, I have zero sympathy for attempting to force the losses on the entire Internet community when for years all the profits have been captured by Verisign. Privatized profits and socialized losses is no way to run a business. Unless you own the business, of course. Then it's fantastic. The rest of us should politely and firmly decline this bullshit. Greetings, I don't agree with that contract between ICANN and Verisign. That does not benefit most users, please allow us to continue using the web freely. I found out about it right now, and I am sure that most people do not know that. Please consider the community. As a user of the web, I think that a consensus must be made with the community: All users of .COM must be notified and they must give their opinion because this matter will affect us directly.
