Hello, I am writing as a small business owner, and a consultant that helps to get many startups and nonprofits a digital presence. In today's world, a website is synonymous with legitimacy for many of these enterprises/endeavors. I work with many socioeconomically disadvantaged, immigrant, and women founders that are making their bet, working their asses off to hit the ground running to make lives for themselves, their communities and their families better. Many of these projects involve multiple domains to avoid competitors squatting on similar web addresses, or separate domains for individuals funds/projects. Raising the expense of these business necessities and threatening the financial bottom-line of these courageous ventures seems truly unfair, and like your organization is leading from a place of greed than a place of understanding. I do hope that ICANN rethinks this price raise in the interest of the fabric that makes up the web eco-system, it's not large multi-nationals - it's a lot of small businesses and dreams that pay that price to have a fighting chance at running. I strongly oppose the proposed changes and price increases for the .com TLD. They far outstrip normal inflation rates and the rates should, if anything go down due to large scale efficiencies as more customers share the operational costs among themselves. This does not happen, instead a private entity is allowed to profit and there is no open competition for a more cost-effective replacement. These changes will only exacerbate the problem. To whom it may concern, I wish to voice my opinion in opposition to the proposed amendment 3 to the .COM registry agreement. It appears that the proposed amendment is designed solely to price smaller companies out of the .COM TLD market. The .COM TLD should not be reserved for multinationals or the rich and famous. Given that it's the globally recognised TLD it's unfair to make it financially unreachable to smaller companies and non-profit organisations. We personally register annually over 20 .COM TLD's. If the proposed amendments causes prices increases of 70% or more that would be a huge hit to our already dwindling income from hosting and registration. You are going to force companies out of business by doing so - and to what end? What is the proposed increase in registration cost supposed to do for the internet? To whom it may concern, I oppose Amendment 3 to the .COM Registry Agreement. I believe that allowing wholesale prices for .com domains to rise 72% over 12 years, which is far more than the rate of inflation and also far more than Verisign's underlying costs of maintaining the registry could possibly increase by, will dramatically hurt the internet ecosystem. It will especially hurt small website operators, like myself, and will discourage internet users from creating blogs and personal pages, with the end result of reducing democratization of the internet. Verisign reported a 69.4% operating margin in Q1 2019, so they clearly do not need the extra revenue from this price hike. ICANN has granted a monopoly over .com to Verisign and ICANN has a duty to every internet user on the planet to carefully regulate this monopoly to prevent abuse by Verisign. The only conscionable thing to do right now is to freeze wholesale .com prices and re-evaluate 5-10 years from now. A policy that allows price increases tracking the rate of inflation (but no higher) may make sense in the future, but right now Verisign is already collecting far more from their .com monopoly than any company would be able to in a competitive market. Please do not increase the fee. Others don't earn as much as you think they earn for a domain. This will cripple us and it would result to the downfall of registries because of higher prices. Many would lose the chance of starting their blog or websites due to expensive fees. Dear ICANN, The internet has long been a tool for the common people. Without us, the internet is simply an educational resource for government, universities, and the rich. Please don't increase .com / .org prices. $10-$20 is already too high. If you want to make money, go after the people that sit on short domain names in hopes of reselling them. If you don’t use a domain within a year of owning it, you should pay massive fees for keeping it locked up.
