I understand that an agreement has been made to substantially increase the wholesale pricing of the .com TLD. I would express my concern that this type of decision has been made purely for a financial decision to increase revenue exponentially. That is totally unacceptable and it has the potential to increase the price by more than 70% over the next ten years. This agreement should be rescinded.

If ICANN was serious about domain improvement, as I believe it is, it needs to move away from giving verisign more power over domains, including pricing. Verisign has proven that they are not in the best interest of ICANN and will eventually cannibalize and destroy ICANN if it serves their purpose as a public company. This isn't a prophecy, it's a legal requirement that Verisign has as a corporation to make the most money it can for its investors. ICANN needs to be wary that Verisign will do its best to limit or block ICANN when they can. This means that ICANN will take money from Verisign now but lose more money later when Verisign uses their money to circumvent ICANN. Stop allowing Verisign to raise prices. Regulate the internet so that ICANN can remain in existence. We need regulation on the internet. We need a neutral third party to make things more competitive and allow for more innovation. This makes ICANN more money, more valuable, and more of a governing body than what it is becoming. Price increases for .COM sites will disproportionately affect folks who're already less economically advantaged, and who rely more on the .COM than you might think. Many of us who run small businesses or are independent contractors or artists choose .COM sites for their easy memorability and because that tends to be what other people will assume our site is, so it's actually a really important part of making sure people can find us, which we obviously need to keep our enterprises going. We are already working within an economic system that drastically privileges and prioritizes large enterprise, and the internet has often been a way around that. I oppose the significant changes to the .com domain policies. As a hobbyist web developer, I deal with people who scoff at some of the ridiculous pricing of domain names now as it is, and with these changes coming into effect, this will not only hurt them, but me as well! I pay my taxes on my income, and in order for me to secure new domains for clients, I would need need to reduce my pricing to develop and build websites for my clients, which is not profitable to me. Therefore by opposing these changes, I accept that I, as a single entity in the World Wide Web community, cannot make a difference, but these changes will send me to the wall, and therefore I am encouraging others like me through social media and word of mouth via my clients can build up enough momentum to see icann stop with the proposed changes. Another money hungry conglomeration out to destroy battlers, who are just trying to put food on the table for their family. I am a disabled person who suffered a major lower back injury but luckily enough not to be placed into a wheelchair, who finds it hard to gain employment of a physical nature due to a work related injury and suffering PTSD and anxiety through my former military service, and a short career in nursing, so basically, this is the only way I can derive an income, but with the introduction of the proposed changes, I dare say this will end my hobby business and potentially put me and my family out on the street? I hope the top notch executives of icann can sleep well at night knowing this, and I know I am not the only one who will be placed in similiar peril! We are small online business owners who depend on our .COM domain as a platform to compete with larger corporations. Increasing fees on .COM domains will have little effect on massive multinational brands and corporations but will continue to pinch small business, making it more difficult for people like us to support ourselves and the local economy. We strongly disagree with this deal made by ICANN and Verisign and are frustrated that a open public forum and consultation was not even granted for the small people like us to have a voice. I am a registrant of multiple .com domain names. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry and it has no business dictating the price. Please reject Proposed Amendment 3, or alternatively limit the price increases to 2% per year. The web, and global DNS, were envisioned to be run for the public good, and they SHOULD be run for the public good. Deals such as this constitute a clear conflict—not to mention an abnegation of the public trust—and are an abdication of that mandate; short-sighted profit chasing at the expense of the greater good. I can understand some products to increase the prices due to fuel price, electricity or a product that need raw materials to be done. From your part i cannot understand this price changes because you don’t produce domain names so you don’t need any raw materials to make it. So whats the real reason to increase the prices? Hello, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is a for-profit US based company. As such it has the right to price it's products anyway it chooses. However, as the saying goes, with much power comes much responsibility. If ICANN is going to raise it's rates for .COM domains. Why has there been no discussion with all of the agents who sell these domains? ICANN exists to facilitate organize the Internet, correct? Then why does it not take input from the Internet before making wholesale decisions which affect the livelihood of millions of people. Also, why does it take money from corporations like Verisign in order to give them preferential treatment? And why does the Dept. of Justice allow this to go unpunished. ICANN is just like any other greedy corporation. They don't even consider the impact on jobs, commerce and people in general. Hello, I am writing to express my strong opposition to the ICANN contract with Verisign affecting .com domains. 40% of all registered domain names online are .COM, including many diverse sites of artists, artisans, writers, public intellectuals, and more. According to this new agreement, Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and the increases don’t stop there. This will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. This is a betrayal of the ideals of the internet as a forum for sharing, free expression, and creativity. As a result, I’ve been able to compete for business despite my size and limited budget. I recently learned about the price increase through my domain name provider. This means that .com wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices during the next decade and beyond. In a nutshell, such an increase threatens my ability to stay in business. If I am forced to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars each year to retain my .com domains, I will cease to be profitable. To those entrusted with keeping the internet gateways, I have received very disturbing news that you are seeking to unilaterally increase wholesale domain name prices for ".com" domains by as much as 70% or more over the next 10 years. Further that you have attempted to do this "stealthily" without consulting the registrars that serve the internet. Apparently you have prior form in this regard; of unilaterrally announcing price increases suddenly and without consultation. But you should consider that the ".com" domain is a different matter than the others. The impact is far greater - and the anger will be much more widely spread and more keenly felt. I for one have not heard of your prior similar behaviour, but as the owner of several .com domains I am now up to speed, and I am pissed!

While I understand businesses need to make a profit, lavishly feeding off of people in such a manner is pure greed. For the record, I have no problem with prices going up over time, but the proposed changes seem excessive under the circumstances. Firstly, for a non-profit organization with the stated goals of promoting competition and broad community representation, the likelihood of these price increases having a substantial negative effect on those goals is very, very high. Secondly, the process was reputedly conducted in direct conflict with the ICANN mandate to conduct its mission through community consensus. If it's true that the negotiation of these price increases was exclusively between ICANN and Verisign, that is definitely inappropriate. I don't know the remedy for such malfeasance but am quite sure that there would be follow-up to correct such malfeasance if any. ICANN has a responsibility to ensure domain name registration is competitive, and signing a deal like this with Verisign does the opposite, further enabling the Verisign monopoly. Allowing Verisign to both set the wholesale rates and compete against wholesalers is a blatant conflict of interest. I believe the changes will hurt the web community as a whole. Greetings, While in support of a strong infrastruction and continued improvements, I cannot support the proposed and approved increases that I have recently been reading about. In short, most of the clients that I currently do work for will be cancelling services and finding other ways to support their needs. We will start looking immediately for alternatives to the .com domain in particular and if prices do indeed rise as much as projected, many of the other domains will cost equivalent or less, so we might as well put our funds into something that is more recognizable to our clients. While not a a large service, my dozen paying clients will look elsewhere. Perhaps more importantly, the dozen or so not for profits and community service organizations will have to give up much of what they are doing, since things are stretched as it is. Also, you cannot just go and increase the renewal fee so drastically?! If I bought my .com for R100, I expect it to renew for around R100 and not R170. I also expect it to be sustainable. Based on past contracts, it is clear the price will go up by the maximum at every opportunity. This is a legalised monopoly and extortion. Contracts should not be negotiated in secret to line icann’s pockets at the expense of millions of consumers. 20m dollars is also really a pittance given the profit verisign can make. Hi, I wanted to voice a comment against the increase in price for .com registrations. .com and other TLD registration prices continue to rise despite the industry maturing into a stable situation where it ought to be able to sustain service at the same price. I would argue that it is monopolistic to raise prices in this way as long as Verisign is a for-profit company. The market and consumes would be better served by the TLD operator being a non-profit and letting natural competition occur at the Registrar level. As long as Verisign, and other TLD Operators, have no competition then any price increase should be viewed with skepticism. Dan Smith
