Hi, .COM is the gold standard of TLD's, not because of any intrinsic value but because of it's name recognition. Increasing the prices of .COM will make online credibility more expensive and available to fewer, but will increase any form of credibility or prestige associated with .COM. Hi, As a domain name holder of almost 25 years, I am concerned with what I am hearing about the new deal with Verisign regarding the .com TLD. These changes hurt small businesses and start ups the hardest. As technology improves, the efficiency should be increasing offsetting most if not all growth related costs. We have important information to share with you that will affect the price of your .COM domains. What's happening? Last month, ICANN, the organization that oversees domain names, announced significant changes to the contract it has with Verisign, Inc. who operate the .COM top-level-domain (TLD). ICANN made these changes in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. Although ICANN has a history of making similar deals behind closed doors, and also of ignoring unified opposition against such action, we are focused on leading the fight against price increases that will harm our customers (and the Internet as a whole). This is a crucial time to raise our voices given that .COM domains make up 40% of all registered domain names online. What does this change mean? Wholesale registries charge Namecheap a set fee per domain name per year. According to this new agreement, Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and the increases don’t stop there. This will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. Why is ICANN doing this? Alongside these contract changes, Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. So, what can you do to help? These changes will have significant impact on the Internet for years to come, and only ICANN and Verisign have participated in this decision. If you want to make sure your voice is heard, let ICANN know how you feel about their recent decision. The Public Comment period is open until February 14, 2020. You can leave your comment on the .COM proposal using ICANN's form.

The proposed changes to the contract are harmful to the world and should not proceed. As a former employee of Verisign, there is no good that comes from that entity. From my experience and personal beliefs, I do not consider Verisigns intentions to be truthful or honest. While I worked for Verisign, I witness many actions taken by senior management that I felt were highly unethical to say the least. This proposal should be rejected.

I am a current owner and registrant of several .COM TLD domains. I am against the proposed price increase for the most common TLD. The current rate is more than enough and much more would be price gouging at the expense of the people that support this TLD. No one wants this increase. Verisign is the only one that wants the increase and is simply being a Money Hungry Corporation. Verisign has no business dictating prices. ICANN, that's you in case you forgot, is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public's, that's US in case you forgot, interest. The internet is and must remain a public good. When private comes in to buy up internet infrastructure to raise prices for the benefit of their limited partners, the world suffers. Value is not created for consumers or the world, rather value is concentrated for the private equity limited partners. In the specific case of the internet, it is a public good that must be protected. We say NO to private equity appropriation of internet infrastructure, raising prices, and holding the internet hostage.

Now more than ever, an open and distributed web is critical to democracy, and decency. Raising domain costs is a direct threat to that, because it reduces the availability of domains to normal consumers, which in turn consolidates power around fewer online properties. I think we've all seen where that has lead with consolidation of personal online presences around Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Without the ability for people to present themselves in their own, personally-controlled spaces, we are all bound to play by the rules of big companies, who are driven by profit motives over all else. Hello, I am writing to voice my opposition to Proposed Amendment 3. Despite there clearly being potential financial gains to be had by raising the registration fee on .com domains, the global DNS registration system should be run primarily as a public concern. The only entities that stand to benefit from the proposed arrangement are verisign itself, at the expense of the public. While price hikes such as this likely won't mean much to the larger business concerns that buy in bulk, it will impact the millions of small, independent businesses and developers that rely on the system as is to make their livelihood. At worst, this could prove yet another point of pressure that convinces a small business to make their online presence exclusively in the Facebook walled garden and eschew the web itself. The web, and global DNS, were envisioned to be run for the public good, and they SHOULD be run for the public good. Deals such as this are an abdication of that mandate; short sighted profit chasing at the expense of all else. Please do not adopt this proposal. Best, Tae Wong Singapore

I have a handful of domains, it sounds like what you’re doing is trying to price me out of owning them. Should we start pushing legislatures to control you? Is that the only option we will have? Inflation is only going up 1% a year, how about you tie rate increases to that and not greed.

Hello, I'm adding my comment to say the ICANN should not increase the price of the .com domain because it will hurt individuals and small businesses the most. These two groups are entrepreneurs or creating jobs in their local communities. Due to that, building an online brand is important to their success. Alas, these people tend to buy a .com domain because it's the most common and trusted on the Internet. So if you increase the fee, these individuals will have to either pay more money for it, which could hurt their business budget, or choose another domain that's cheaper.
