Satish and Bill Jouris, Many thanks for your work on Latin Diacritics PDP. I keep catching up on the ICANN Confluence Wiki. It is indeed nice that Latin originally used the apex [plural apices] to indicate a long vowel, while medieval scripts introduced many abbreviations for space-saving. They allow the Latin alphabet to adapt to specific languages without adding entirely new letters. If not available, diacritics are sometimes replaced by combinations (e.g., ae for ä). Suggested Reading: Special characters (diacritics) used in European languages https://jakubmarian.com/special-characters-diacritics-used-in-european-langu... The attached image from the above article is very useful. As you would appreciate, keeping the machine is focus gives many alternative methods of working with the diacritics including the stnadpoint of Indic scripts. Hi Gopal, I'm aware of the use of letter combinations to substitute for diacritics when the keyboard doesn't allow their use. Unfortunately, the Latin Generation Panel decided that those combinations could not be considered when we were working on the original LGR. And thus the Diacritics Working Group didn't consider them either. Just a little bit of history FYI. Thank you again Bill Jouris. Just thinking aloud: There is ani inevitable interconnectedness across 150 + language scripts that appear together through the lens of UNICODE. LGR is certainly an method to "tear - off" any given language script and position t in a well articulated space of ICANN remit. For me it has always been a great learning experience to manage around this "invariant" basis without much indulgence into geopolitics. Yes. History does teach several lessons. Well, Bill, I have not been active with the panel but I have the feeling that including the multiple character combination would likely open the typical can of worms. I can remember that, when working in software development in an European institution, I had the problem of how to deal with “LL” that in the Spanish alphabet is a separate character from “L”+”L”… This created, for instance, a big issue in alphabetical order of last names because “Llorente” comes after “Lopez” in Spain - but not in other European countries. However, that was 30+ years ago, maybe now there’s less push to enforce local rules and a common European approach has become the practice, if not the rule. Incidentally, thanks to Gopal for the link to the jakubmarian.com<http://jakubmarian.com/> web site, I browsed it a bit around and there are some very good information not just about alphabets - and therefore relevant for UA - but also on European languages themselves - and therefore useful for a better understanding on multilingualism.
