I appreciate the nominations I have received, and am prepared to accept them, but would also like to suggest that the working group consider a slightly different approach. Let's be candid. If you review the list of participants in this working group, the vast majority of them fall into one of three sectors: intellectual property interests, non-commercial representatives, or registrars. Our challenge is to bring together these three camps, which have divergent (though to some extent overlapping) interests and goals, to make progress on the extensive and complex topics assigned to us. One way to address that challenge might be to assemble a leadership triumvirate consisting of representatives from all three of these groups. That seems to be where we are headed right now. But this approach could also add another administrative layer to our operations that is likely to prove unwieldy, inefficient, and a drain on the finite bandwidth we all bring to this task. An option worth considering would be to select a single chair who is independent of all three of these sectors. Fortunately, with Don Blumenthal, we have a working group member who not only fits that bill, but who also brings significant relevant experience to the role. Most recently, I had the opportunity to serve with Don on the Thick Whois PDP WG, where he took on an important leadership role for one of the most critical subgroups, and did an excellent job, in my opinion. With that context I would like to nominate Don as our chair and to ask fellow Working Group members to consider whether independent leadership, rather than a troika representing the three main tendencies, would be a better way to proceed. I look forward to hearing what others think about this. The objective of this meeting is to allow for new GNSO WG participants to come together and ask any questions you may have about GNSO Working Groups, procedures and/or processes. Dear All, As discussed during Tuesday's meeting, you'll find attached a first draft of the mind map which is intended to aid the WG in its development of the work plan. For those of you that were not on the call, the idea is to use the next call(s) to brainstorm on the approach to tackling the charter questions which is intended to facilitate the WG's development of its work plan. In addition to some of the basic information derived from the charter as well as the WG discussions to date, the mind map also includes some proposed questions the WG may want to consider as part of the brainstorm. Follow up on Whois-related definitions

Hello everyone, As requested, attached is the Definitions Document that was prepared by the GNSO's Whois Drafting Team in February 2009. By way of further background, much of the more recent GNSO work on various aspects of Whois can be attributed to an October 2007 resolution by the GNSO Council which approved a "comprehensive, objective and quantifiable understanding of key factual issues [that] would benefit future GNSO policy development efforts". As a result, a few GNSO groups were formed first, a Whois Study Group to develop a list of possible Whois studies, followed by a Whois Hypothesis Working Group to develop a series of hypothesis to be tested, and then a Whois Drafting Team that consolidated and ranked suggested studies based on feedback from the GAC and the various GNSO constituencies. As part of its work, the Whois DT created the list of definitions that are attached to this email. Subsequently, in March 2009, the GNSO Council resolved to investigate the cost and feasibility of certain Whois studies: http://gnso.icann.org/en/council/resolutions#200903. In April 2011, the GNSO Council resolved to proceed with the Privacy & Proxy Abuse Study: http://gnso.icann.org/en/council/resolutions#201104. Since the question of Relay/Reveal was brought up both in this group's informal meeting in Buenos Aires and in the Expert Working Group's Status Report, members may also find the staff report on the proposed Relay/Reveal Study (which explains why a pre-feasibility study was done instead) helpful. As such, I've attached the staff report to this email as well.
