RSSAC Caucus Future Work Items

Dear RSSAC Caucus Members, The RSSAC Admin Committee held a discussion last week on potential future work items for the RSSAC Caucus to consider. We went over past ideas we have heard from the Caucus, and discussed if any are still outstanding and may warrant a future work party. One work item that came up was a suggestion from maybe two years ago that the RSSAC Caucus investigate best current practices for hosting root server instances. This work would look at requirements for hosting instances including such things as physical requirements, BGP peering, etc. It would identify requirements common to most RSOs and document best practices in an RSSAC publication. The Admin Committee felt this item is out of scope for the RSSAC Caucus to consider, primarily because this is a consideration for each RSO to make independently. However, the Admin Committee also wanted to give the Caucus a chance to respond in case others disagree. There are currently no items in the queue for future RSSAC Caucus work parties. If you have an idea for something the RSSAC Caucus should work on please send your suggestion to this list for discussion. Thanks, Andrew

Updating the RSSAC FAQ

Dear RSSAC Caucus Members, The RSSAC workplan says that the RSSAC updates their Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) every year in December. We’re starting with it now so we can be finished by December. Implementing RSSAC057

Dear RSSAC Caucus Members, I’ve been working on an implementation of RSSAC057: Requirements for Measurements of the Local Perspective on the Root Server System. It can be found here: <https://github.com/rssac-caucus/perf_root <https://github.com/rssac-caucus/perf_root>> It’s a python script that relies heavily on dnspython. It has a bunch of CLI options, but if executed without any options it will perform according to RSSAC057 and output JSON when it finishes. Attaced is a JSON file from running it at an Amsterdam datacenter. There are two discrepencies I note below. Otherwise I believe it conforms with RSSAC057. - It only performs UDP traceroutes and RSSAC057 specifies UDP and TCP traceroutes. TCP traceroute requires root and I didn’t think it wise for this script to require root. - RSSAC057 specifies a traceroute probe timeout of 5 seconds. I instead chose to use the variable default of the traceroute binary judging that it probably knows best. And below are a couple gotchas I note for people interested in testing it. - It requires dnspython 2.2.0, which is really new. I needed 2.2.0 because it adds the ability to set specific DNS flags in dns.message.make_query(). - I’ve developed this on Debian Linux, but it theoretically should work on anything that supports python3 and dnspython. The thing that will break is the python mulItprocessing.pool library which I use to perform all the testing asynchronously. I could not get this library to properly handle UNIX signals on OpenBSD, so I don’t recommend running this on OpenBSD. It did work on FreeBSD when I tested it. I’m definitely interested in the experiences of others on OSs other than Linux. Thanks, Andrew

Call for Volunteers | Work Stream 2 (WS2) Implementation - Formation of a Community Coordination Group

Dear RSSAC Caucus members, ICANN org has requested that the ICANN community indicate whether it wishes to form a Community Coordination Group (CCG) to plan the implementation of Work Stream 2 recommendations that may require and/or benefit from the cross-community coordination and prioritization. RSSAC Admin Committee supports the formation of such a Community Coordination Group. RSSAC Admin Committee understands that participants in CCG will not be representing or defending the views of their appointing Supporting Organizations/Advisory Committees. On the other hand, RSSAC Admin Committee thinks RSSAC’s engagement with CCG is important as a number of checks and balances RSSAC said it needed in the Root Server System Governance Working Group (RSS GWG) process are covered in the Work Stream 2 recommendations. Please consider this note as a call for volunteers to serve on the Community Coordination Group to be formed. The RSSAC Caucus Membership Committee will also make recommendations to the RSSAC for certain appointments. Request for input on RSSAC047v2: Contents of the Authority section for ./SOA responses

Greetings again. In RSSAC047, Section 5.3 covers the different types of queries that might be made for correctness. One type of query is for ./SOA. The document says: For positive responses for QNAME = . and QTYPE = SOA, a correct result requires all of the following: . . . The Authority section contains the signed NS RRset for the root. Some RSOs (at least B, K, and L) return empty Authority sections for these queries, at least some of the time on some instances, which would make they fail the test. A proposed change to the text is: The Authority section contains the signed NS RRset for the root, or is empty. Does anyone ojbect to this proposed change? --Paul Hoffman
