Reminder about the process Joke: idea is to determine the scope first, before starting to prepare a survey. hence today’s brainstorming. 1. Brainstorming scope: mentimeter questions & discussion Note by Joke: notes below are in addition to the responses in the mentimeter poll. Those responses will be shared separately. 1. What specific information does UAC want to gather, via the survey? (free text answers) Understanding the landscape for ccTLDs? challenges and opportunities and how can UAC help ccTLDs to overcome those challenges? Cooperation with UASG. Testimonials from ccTLDs Joke: solution mode 2. Who is the target audience of the UAC survey? (free text answers) Seda: all ccTLDs. last time we targeted those ccTLDs that run both an ASCII ccTLD and an IDN ccTLDs. Joke: Egypt. who received survey? ASCII or IDN ccTLD manager? Seda: think both in that case Abdalmonem: this survey should not go to tech staff. rather to policy makers or analysts. Technical guys are the back-end. they are not the ones we should target. we should target the decision-makers Regina: i suggested it. it depends on the type of information. if we look at practical technical challenges, the tech staff is best positioned to comment. hope the survey will not be too surficial. hope we collect practical insights, and not just high level information. 3. How will UAC use the survey results? (free text answers) Abdalmonem: identify the challenges. Joke: what do you do then? Abdalmomen: for tech issues, we should cooperate with UASG for policy-related matters, speak with the decision makers and promote UA awareness Ao-Chin Lu: find the issues, and suggest a solution. awareness and info sharing is done by ICANN and other ROs. If UAC wants to be unique, you need to find a solution. cooperate with UASG. and email service providers, and find a solution change. 4. What are the potential challenges or limitations for UAC? (free text answers) Abdalmomen: maybe we risk sending the survey to the wrong person? also the lack of awareness about UA by the ccTLD might affect the number of responses. Joke: limited number of responses prevents UAC from having a complete picture Regina: do we have the survey as a one-off? or repeat in future? Joke: up to UAC to decide Regina: from our experience the landscape does not change much in one year time. Abdalmomen: another challenge is the timing of the survey. during the icann meeting. if ccTLD could respond during the meeting, that would be good. others can be contacted by GSE team Joke: survey would not be launched at ICANN 81 but afterwards. only heads up at icann 81 Abdalmomen: tech guy or policy guy? not good to have more answers. from the early beginning, we need to identify the audience Joke: DASC addressed this by making questions available offline. so people can consult colleagues Abdalmomen: make this clear when we send out the survey 5. What are the potential challenges or limitations for respondents? (free text answers) Abdalmomen: lack of awareness. not correct person to answer the survey. 1. Next steps Joke: we will share the results of this poll 6. AOB Qing Cai: sharing difficulties in development of IDNs. make open-ended questions. Abdalmomen: issues in working with IDNs Qing Cai: yes Abdalmomen: if I have technical challenges, i am at the early stages. we need to help those ccTLDs regarding EAI 7. Dear all, Please find attached a letter from ICANN to the ccNSO UA Committee inviting the UAC and other members of the community with a call to organize UA Day 2025 events. Yesterday ICANN has posted the Call for proposals for UA Day 2025. • Call for proposals for UA Day 2025: https://universalacceptance.day/ • Announcement: https://uasg.tech/2024/08/global-internet-community-encouraged-to-submit-ev… May I suggest that the leadership of the UAC alerts the ccTLD community by announcing the call for proposals and secondly announcing (& organizing) a webinar ( 18 or 19 September) to invite the ccTLD community to get involved? We may want to replay the presentations from ICANN80, adding one or two other from other ccTLDs that have organized an UA Day and invite ICANN’s UA team to provide a little info regarding the call for proposals and process? Invitation to broader community - List of IDN ccTLD email contacts Bart: starting collecting the admin-c addresses. Almost done: 5 or 6 remaining. Together with a generic letter to the community, you will reach many Abdalmonem: important. Can we have a brochure, to distribute among our networks? Bart: if you have the time to develop and design? Having the email up and running. To show real work is the priority now. People want to see what it brings. Show that UAC is alive, showing the value. To date, one presentation. You have been involved in UA Day. but we need to start exploring where we really can make a difference. Be careful not to spend too much time on inviting people, in contrast to showing the value of the UAC. Joke: suggestion to include it in the ccNSO monthly newsletter. Design-effort is less intense. Abdalmonem: yes please. 4. Survey: next steps a. How to develop specific Survey: example DNS Abuse survey Joke: The purpose of the survey is important. The purpose determines the kind and scope of the questions. Intense work with a small group to develop the questions. Have a test run before you distribute the survey with the broader audience. Regina: yes, I recognise the process Important to think about your target audience. For CENTR surveys it is a challenge if the questions cannot be answered by one person. Have a copy offline available? Share a unique link with colleagues. Fill it in together with others? Useful input. Seda: yes, it does ring a bell. We had multiple conversations with the team. Type of questions is limited. How do you intend to make use of the answers? Mobilise the ccTLDs? Or collect information? Statistical info. Some questions ask about actions they intend to take in the future. Ask them to mobilize. We do not want to push anyone. No liability. Cctlds are not contracted parties. Other considerations: what can we offer ccTLDs? We found a few purposes, and developed the questions around these. Bart: sense of looking at the questions in the other 2 surveys. Regina and Seda gave a helpful overview. We should start having a discussion around the goal and purpose of the survey. Homework for the next meeting. That is the core question. Next meeting: brainstorming regarding the purpose of the survey. Bart: intention is to have the basic questions ready by ICANN81. Avoid overlap with DASC. Regina: makes sense. Question to Seda. have you considered to adapt the ICANN org survey? I want to avoid double questions. Bart: you target the same audience. Regina: our survey is short, and we aim to send it out at the start of the year. Bart: i recall from previous conversations with Sarmad, that you were unsure whether icann would do a 2nd UA readiness survey? Seda: probably yes. But probably not in the short term. No timeline yet. Survey for contracted parties. Depending also on UAC activities. Bart: who is sending the survey is another matter. This group to come up with purpose and questions relevant to UAC and ccTLDs. Abdalmonem: 2 factors * Eurid survey and icann survey * Icann survey from 2 years ago. Related to ccTLDs. They have the main purpose. Questions that are already there. Since then, many new developments. This new committee is keen to publish its survey. To have more replies. Bart: good input, different purpose statements. The purpose will drive the direction of the questions. How do you intend to use the results? What is the focus of the questions? Action item #1: Ahead of the next meeting, UAC members reflect on the purpose of the survey. 1. Review: of questions ICANN ccTLD UA readiness survey 5. Additionally. Is there homework regarding the newsletter? Joke: will prepare a draft and circulate with Regina and Abdalmonem. Will ask both for a slot to conduct a video interview. Seda: UA Day 2025 planning kicks off. We also prepared an invitation letter. Please spread the word among your community. Call for proposals. Webinar for ccTLD community? Bart: let’s discuss offline, and come up with a proposal for the committee. Webinar for ccTLDs to get them interested in UA Day. see how we can help. We have a lot of experience.
